How PPF maturity is calculated
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) pays interest at a rate set by the Government of India each quarter. Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, but it is credited and compounded once a year on 31 March. Depositing on or before 5 April therefore earns interest for the whole year.
With the same deposit D made at the start of every year for n years at rate r:
M = D × ((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r)
Example: ₹1,50,000 every April for 15 years at 7.1%: M = 1,50,000 × ((1.071)15 − 1) ÷ 0.071 × 1.071 ≈ ₹40,68,209. You invest ₹22,50,000 and earn about ₹18,18,209 of tax-free interest.

Frequently asked questions
How is PPF interest calculated?
Interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, and the total is credited once a year on 31 March, so it compounds annually. For yearly deposits made by 5 April, maturity = D × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r).
What is the PPF maturity amount for ₹1.5 lakh per year?
At 7.1% with deposits made at the start of each year, ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years grows to about ₹40,68,209. You invest ₹22,50,000, so the interest is roughly ₹18,18,209.
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The rate is reviewed every quarter by the Ministry of Finance. It has been 7.1% per year since April 2020, but you should confirm the current rate on the India Post or your bank's website and enter it here.
Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?
Yes. You can extend it indefinitely in blocks of 5 years, either continuing deposits (apply with Form 4 within a year of maturity) or without new deposits, in which case the balance keeps earning interest.
Why deposit before 5 April?
Interest for each month uses the lowest balance between the 5th and the month end. A deposit made by 5 April counts for all 12 months of the financial year; a deposit made in March earns almost nothing that year.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF has EEE status: deposits are deductible under Section 80C (old tax regime), and both the yearly interest and the maturity amount are exempt from income tax.
