The four dimensions
The four-letter model goes back to Carl Jung's Psychological Types (1921), later expanded by Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. Each letter is one side of a preference pair. Everybody uses both sides; the letter only shows which one you reach for more naturally.
| Dimension | First letter | Second letter | Example statement in this test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy | Extraversion: recharged by people and activity | Introversion: recharged by quiet and reflection | "After a busy social day, I need quiet time alone to recharge." |
| Information | Sensing: facts, details, experience | INtuition: patterns, ideas, possibilities | "I often notice patterns and connections that others miss." |
| Decisions | Thinking: logic and consistency | Feeling: values and the people affected | "I would rather be honest than tactful." |
| Lifestyle | Judging: planned and decided | Perceiving: flexible and open | "I adapt easily when plans change at the last minute." |
The 16 types at a glance
The types are often grouped into four families by their middle letters. Colours on the result card follow these groups.
| Group | Types | Common theme |
|---|---|---|
| Analysts (NT) | INTJ, INTP, ENTJ, ENTP | Logic, strategy, competence and new ideas |
| Idealists (NF) | INFJ, INFP, ENFJ, ENFP | Meaning, personal growth and helping people |
| Guardians (SJ) | ISTJ, ISFJ, ESTJ, ESFJ | Responsibility, structure and loyalty |
| Explorers (SP) | ISTP, ISFP, ESTP, ESFP | Action, hands-on skill and living in the moment |
How to read your percentages
- 50–55% (balanced): you use both sides about equally. The letter could easily flip on a retest, so read both type descriptions.
- 56–69% (moderate): a noticeable lean that shows up in most situations but not all.
- 70–84% (clear): a consistent preference that friends would probably recognise.
- 85–100% (very clear): a strong preference; the opposite side may feel tiring or unnatural.
Personality psychologists more often use the Big Five traits, which measure the same kind of differences on continuous scales instead of four either-or letters. Extraversion appears in both models. Treat your type as a starting point for reflection, not a label.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official Myers–Briggs (MBTI) test?
No. This is a free, independent quiz based on the same four Jungian preference pairs (Extraversion–Introversion, Sensing–Intuition, Thinking–Feeling, Judging–Perceiving). The official MBTI is a licensed instrument delivered by certified practitioners; this test is not affiliated with it and is for fun and self-reflection.
How is my type calculated?
Each statement belongs to one dimension and is worded toward one side. Strongly agree counts 2 points, agree 1, neutral 0, disagree −1 and strongly disagree −2, reversed for statements worded toward the other side. Your percentage is 50% plus your score divided by the maximum possible score times 50%. The side above 50% gives the letter.
What happens if I score exactly 50% on a dimension?
An exact tie is shown as a balanced preference and the letter defaults to the second option (I, N, F or P), the usual tie-break convention. Read both type profiles, because a balanced result means either description may fit you.
Why did I get a different type when I retook the test?
Preferences close to 50% can flip with small changes in how you answer on a given day. Research on four-letter type tests shows many people get at least one different letter on a retest, which is why the percentage bars are more informative than the letters alone.
Is one personality type better than another?
No. Every type has strengths and blind spots, and people of every type succeed in every kind of job and relationship. The result describes preferences, not abilities, intelligence or mental health.
Can this test be used for hiring or diagnosis?
No. It is not a clinical or validated psychological instrument and should not be used for hiring, selection or diagnosing anything. Use it as a conversation starter about how you like to work and communicate.
Are my answers stored?
Your progress is kept in your browser's local storage so you can resume, and it is cleared when you finish. Nothing is sent to a server. A share link only contains your four letters and percentages.
