Rising Sign Calculator
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Enter your birth date, exact time and place to find it to the degree, along with your sun sign and midheaven.
For entertainment. The astronomy is real; what it says about your personality is up to you.
Use the offset that was in force at the time of birth, including daylight saving time (for example +1 for London in summer, −4 for New York in summer, +5.5 for India).

How to use the Rising Sign Calculator
- Enter your birth date and your birth time as shown on the local clock, ideally from a birth certificate.
- Choose your birth city from the list. The correct historical time zone and daylight saving time are applied for you.
- Born somewhere else? Switch to Enter coordinates and type the latitude, longitude and the UTC offset that applied at your birth.
- Press Calculate rising sign to see your ascendant, sun sign and midheaven on the zodiac wheel.
- Open Show the calculation to follow every step, from Universal Time to the final ascendant degree.
The math behind your ascendant
- Universal Time: the local clock time minus the UTC offset in force at birth (for example 08:30 in London in June, BST, is 07:30 UT).
- Julian Day: JD = Unix time in days + 2,440,587.5. T = (JD − 2,451,545) ÷ 36,525 is the number of centuries since the year 2000.
- Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time: GMST = 280.46061837° + 360.98564736629° × (JD − 2,451,545) + 0.000387933° × T² − T³ ÷ 38,710,000, reduced to 0 to 360°.
- Local Sidereal Time (RAMC, θ) = GMST + longitude (east positive).
- Obliquity of the ecliptic: ε = 23.4392911° − 0.0130042° × T (plus tiny higher terms), the tilt of Earth's axis.
- Ascendant: λ = atan2(cos θ, −(sin θ × cos ε + tan φ × sin ε)), where φ is the latitude. Every 30° of λ is one sign, starting at 0° Aries.
Worked example
Take 1 January 2000 at 12:00 UT on the equator at 0° longitude. The Julian Day is exactly 2,451,545.0, so T = 0 and GMST = 280.4606°. With longitude 0°, θ = 280.4606°. With ε = 23.4393° and φ = 0°, tan φ = 0, so λ = atan2(cos 280.4606°, −sin 280.4606° × cos 23.4393°) = atan2(0.1816, 0.9023) ≈ 11.38°. The ascendant is about 11° Aries.
Zodiac signs by ecliptic longitude
| Sign | Longitude | Element | Sign | Longitude | Element |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | 0° to 30° | Fire | ♎︎ Libra | 180° to 210° | Air |
| ♉︎ Taurus | 30° to 60° | Earth | ♏︎ Scorpio | 210° to 240° | Water |
| ♊︎ Gemini | 60° to 90° | Air | ♐︎ Sagittarius | 240° to 270° | Fire |
| ♋︎ Cancer | 90° to 120° | Water | ♑︎ Capricorn | 270° to 300° | Earth |
| ♌︎ Leo | 120° to 150° | Fire | ♒︎ Aquarius | 300° to 330° | Air |
| ♍︎ Virgo | 150° to 180° | Earth | ♓︎ Pisces | 330° to 360° | Water |
At mid-northern latitudes, signs from Capricorn to Gemini rise quickly (sometimes in under an hour), while signs from Cancer to Sagittarius take longer, often more than two hours. That is why some rising signs are more common than others.
Frequently asked questions
What is a rising sign?
The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of your birth. In astrology it is linked to first impressions and outward style, while the sun sign describes your core identity.
Why do I need my exact birth time?
The Earth's rotation carries all twelve signs over the horizon roughly once a day, so the rising sign changes about every two hours on average, and much faster for some signs. A birth time that is off by even 15 to 30 minutes can change the result if your ascendant is near the edge of a sign.
How is the ascendant calculated?
The local birth time is converted to Universal Time, then to a Julian Day. From that the calculator finds Greenwich sidereal time, adds your longitude to get local sidereal time (RAMC), and computes the obliquity of the ecliptic. The ascendant is then atan2(cos RAMC, −(sin RAMC × cos ε + tan latitude × sin ε)), converted into a zodiac sign and degree.
Does it handle daylight saving time?
Yes. When you choose a city, the calculator uses your browser's built-in time zone database, which includes historical daylight saving and time zone changes for most places since the early 1900s. If you enter coordinates manually, type the UTC offset that was in force at your birth.
Which zodiac does this use?
It uses the tropical zodiac with 0° Aries at the March equinox, which is the standard in Western astrology. Sidereal (Vedic) astrology uses a zodiac shifted by about 24°, so its rising sign can differ.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Without a birth time the rising sign cannot be determined reliably. Your sun sign will almost always be correct, though. Try a few times across the day to see how the ascendant changes, and check birth records or ask family members if you can.
Is astrology scientifically proven?
No. The positions of the horizon, the ecliptic and the Sun are calculated with real astronomy, but the personality meanings associated with signs are a tradition, not science. This tool is for entertainment.
