Overview
Who are you, what do you do, where, and why?
Name, industry, stage and location in the first sentence.
Problem
What pain does your customer have today?
Describe it from the customer's side, with a concrete example.
Solution
What exactly do you sell and how does it fix the problem?
Focus on results; leave feature lists for the main plan.
Market opportunity
Who buys, how many of them, how much do they spend?
Give a yearly market figure and its source in the full plan.
Competitive advantage
Why will customers choose you over alternatives?
Name the alternatives; “no competition” is rarely believed.
Revenue for years 1–3, margin and break-even point.
Funding request
How much do you need, on what terms, for what?
Tie the amount to specific uses and milestones.
Formulas used
Compound annual growth rate: CAGR = (Year 3 revenue ÷ Year 1 revenue)1/2 − 1. Example: 1.1 million growing to 4.2 million gives (4.2 ÷ 1.1)0.5 − 1 ≈ 95.4% per year.
Interpolated year 2 revenue: √(Year 1 × Year 3), the value that keeps growth constant. Example: √(1.1M × 4.2M) ≈ 2.15 million.
Year 3 net profit: Year 3 revenue × net margin. Example: 4.2 million × 11% = 462,000.
Reading time: words ÷ 200 words per minute, a typical pace for business documents.
Common mistakes to avoid
Too long. If it does not fit on one page, the reader may stop before the funding request.
Vague claims. Replace “huge market” and “rapid growth” with numbers.
Numbers that do not match. Revenue, break-even and the funding amount must agree with your financial projections.
Jargon. Write so that a smart reader from outside your industry understands every sentence.
No clear ask. End with exactly what you want the reader to do next.
Frequently asked questions
What is an executive summary in a business plan?
It is the first section of a business plan: a one- to two-page overview of the whole plan. It states what the company does, the problem it solves, the target market, the competitive advantage, the team, key financial projections and, if you need money, how much and what it will be used for.
How long should an executive summary be?
Usually one page, roughly 400 to 500 words single-spaced, and no more than about two pages for a long plan. A half-page version of around 150 to 250 words works well for emails and pitch competition forms.
Should I write the executive summary first or last?
Write it last. It summarises decisions and numbers from the rest of the plan, so it is easier and more accurate once the market analysis and financial projections are finished. It still goes first in the document.
What is the difference between an investor and a bank executive summary?
Investors look for market size, growth potential, a strong team and the equity offered. Lenders care more about stable cash flow, the break-even point, how the loan will be used and how it will be repaid. The generator changes the funding section and wording for each audience.
How is the revenue growth rate calculated?
The tool uses the compound annual growth rate between year 1 and year 3: CAGR = (Year 3 revenue ÷ Year 1 revenue)^(1/2) − 1. Year 2 in the table is interpolated at that same constant rate, so replace it with your own projection if you have one.
Can I use the summary for a grant or a project proposal?
Yes. Choose Internal plan or partners, skip the fields that do not apply and edit the text afterwards. The structure of problem, solution, impact, team and budget works for most proposals.
Is my business information private?
Yes. The summary is generated entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the draft is saved only in this browser's local storage.
