How to use the Bathroom Remodel Cost Calculator
Choose the bathroom type: powder room, full bath or primary bath.
Enter the floor area in square feet and pick a finish level.
Tick the items you plan to replace or add.
Set labor: keep contractors, adjust the local labor index, or untick for DIY.
Press Estimate cost to see the range and itemized breakdown, and download the CSV to compare quotes.
How the bathroom estimate works
The calculator prices each part of the job separately, then adds soft costs:
Layout by bathroom type. A powder room has no tub or shower. A full bath assumes a tub/shower combo with about 75 sq ft of tiled walls. A primary bath assumes a separate tub and shower (about 110 sq ft of wall tile) and a double vanity.
Materials = quantity × the price for your finish level; labor = quantity × labor rate × your local labor index (0 for DIY).
Design & permits are 2%, 4% or 8% of the subtotal by finish level, then your contingency is added.
The range runs from 80% to 130% of the typical figure.

Bathroom remodel tips
Waterproofing matters most. Pay for a proper membrane behind shower tile; it's cheap compared with fixing a leak later.
Keep the toilet and drains where they are to avoid cutting floors and rerouting vents.
Use large tiles on walls and small tiles on shower floors. Fewer grout lines are easier to clean, and small floor tiles slope better and grip better.
Vent to the outside. A correctly sized exhaust fan (about 1 CFM per square foot for small baths) protects your new finishes from mold.
Plan the order: demolition → plumbing/electrical rough-in → inspection → waterproofing → tile → vanity, toilet and fixtures → glass door last.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a bathroom remodel cost?
With this calculator's planning prices, a mid-range remodel of a 45 sq ft full bathroom (new tile, vanity, toilet, tub, glass door, fixtures and lighting) comes to about $16,000 (range roughly $13,000–$21,000). A budget powder room refresh can be under $3,000, and a large high-end primary bath with a separate tub and shower can pass $70,000.
Why do small bathrooms cost so much per square foot?
A bathroom packs plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile and fixtures into a small space, and many costs (toilet, vanity, valve, fan) are the same whatever the size. That's why bathrooms usually cost more per square foot than any other room.
What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?
Labor for tile and plumbing is usually the biggest share, followed by the tub or shower and the vanity. Tiling a shower is slow, skilled work, and moving a drain or toilet flange adds plumbing and sometimes floor framing work.
What is the difference between a powder room, full bath and primary bath?
A powder room (half bath) has only a toilet and sink. A full bath adds a tub or shower, usually a tub/shower combo. A primary (master) bath is attached to the main bedroom and often has a separate tub and walk-in shower plus a double vanity.
How much tile do I need for a bathroom?
Add the floor area and the tiled wall area around the tub or shower (a standard 5 ft tub surround to about 6 ft high is roughly 70–80 sq ft), then add 10% for cuts and breakage, or 15% for diagonal or large-format patterns.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A straightforward full-bath remodel typically takes 2–4 weeks of work once materials are on site; custom tile, layout changes, inspections or special-order vanities and glass can stretch it to 6–8 weeks.
