Instagram Caption Formatter

Write your caption with the line breaks and blank lines you want. The formatter adds invisible characters so Instagram keeps the spacing, counts characters and hashtags, and shows a live phone preview.

How to use the Instagram Caption Formatter

  1. Write or paste your caption exactly as you want it to look, with empty lines between paragraphs.
  2. Add hashtags in the hashtag box, or press Pull hashtags from caption to move hashtag-only lines there.
  3. Choose how hashtags are separated: invisible lines, dots or a single blank line.
  4. Check the preview and counters. The preview shows where Instagram cuts the caption with … more, and the counters warn you about the 2,200-character and 30-hashtag limits.
  5. Press Copy formatted caption and paste it into Instagram.

How the invisible line break trick works

Instagram treats an empty line as nothing and squeezes paragraphs together. The fix is to make each empty line not empty: the formatter puts a single invisible character on it. To Instagram the line now has content, so it keeps it, but to your followers it looks blank.

Example: you type

Line one
(empty line)
Line two

and the formatter copies Line one, ⠀ (U+2800), Line two. The same trick protects indented lines: a spacer is placed before the leading spaces so they are not trimmed away.

Invisible characters compared

CharacterCode pointWidthNotes
Braille Pattern BlankU+2800About one spaceMost reliable in captions, bios and comments. Default choice.
Hangul FillerU+3164About two spacesWorks in most apps; a few fonts show it as a small box.
Left-to-Right MarkU+200EZeroCompletely invisible, but some app versions strip it.

Each invisible character counts as one character towards the 2,200 limit, so a caption with ten blank lines uses ten extra characters.

Put the hook in the first line: it is all most people see before they decide to tap more. Hashtags after a few spacer lines keep the caption readable while still being searchable.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Instagram remove my line breaks?

Instagram collapses empty lines and trims spaces at the start of lines. A common culprit is also a space typed just before pressing Enter, which can make the app ignore the line break. The formatter removes those trailing spaces and puts an invisible character on every empty line, so the spacing is kept.

How do I add a blank line in an Instagram caption?

Put an invisible character on the empty line. This tool does it automatically: type your caption with empty lines, press Copy formatted caption and paste it into Instagram. Each empty line contains a Braille blank (U+2800) that looks like nothing but counts as content.

Which invisible character works best?

The Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800) is the most reliable choice and is the default. The Hangul Filler (U+3164) also works in most places. The left-to-right mark (U+200E) has no width at all, but some app versions strip it, so test it with a draft first.

What is the character limit for Instagram captions?

An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters, including spaces, emojis, hashtags and the invisible spacer characters. Only about the first 125 characters show in the feed before the caption is cut off with … more.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Instagram has long allowed up to 30 hashtags per post, and a post with more can fail to publish. Instagram has also been moving towards fewer hashtags and some accounts see lower limits, so a handful of relevant hashtags is usually the better choice.

Does it work for Instagram bios and comments?

Yes. The same invisible characters keep line breaks and blank lines in bios, comments and Threads posts. Bios are limited to 150 characters, so keep an eye on the counter.

Is my caption uploaded anywhere?

No. Formatting happens in your browser. Your draft is only saved in your own browser so it is still there when you come back.
