How to use the WhatsApp Chat Analyzer
Export the chat in WhatsApp: open the chat, tap the contact or group name (iPhone) or the ⋮ menu › More (Android), choose Export chat and pick Without media.
Save or send the file to the device you are using. iPhone creates a .zip containing _chat.txt; Android creates a .txt file.
Drop the file here or click Choose chat file. You can also paste the chat text.
Explore the results: per-person stats, activity charts, heatmap, top words and emojis. Use Show charts for to focus on one person.
Download CSV files of the stats or all messages for your own spreadsheets.
Export formats the analyzer understands
WhatsApp writes each message on a line that starts with the date and time in your phone's regional format. The analyzer recognizes all the common variants, including multi-line messages:
Phone
Example line
Android, US
12/31/23, 9:41 PM - Alex: Happy new year!
Android, UK / India / most countries
31/12/2023, 21:41 - Alex: Happy new year!
Android, Germany
31.12.23, 21:41 - Alex: Frohes neues Jahr!
iPhone
[31/12/2023, 21:41:05] Alex: Happy new year!
iPhone, US
[12/31/23, 9:41:05 PM] Alex: Happy new year!
ISO dates
2023-12-31, 21:41 - Alex: Happy new year!
System notices such as "Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted", "Alex added Sam" or subject changes are skipped. Placeholders like <Media omitted>, image omitted and <attached: …> are counted as media, and "This message was deleted" lines are counted separately so they do not inflate word counts.
How each statistic is calculated
Words are runs of letters and digits in text messages; media placeholders, deleted messages and links do not count. Words per message divides by text messages only.
Emojis are counted as whole emoji, so a family emoji or a flag counts once, and skin tone variants are grouped with the base emoji.
Conversation starts are messages sent after 6 or more hours of silence (plus the very first message).
Median reply uses every message that answers someone else within 12 hours. The median is the middle value, so one reply after a long night does not distort it.
Longest daily streak is the longest run of consecutive calendar days with at least one message.
Times are shown exactly as written in the export, which uses the time zone of the phone that exported the chat.
Top words hide common English words such as "the", "and" and "you" plus participants' names, so the list shows what the chat is really about. Untick Hide common words to see the raw ranking. This analyzer is an independent tool and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
Frequently asked questions
How do I export a WhatsApp chat?
On iPhone, open the chat, tap the name at the top, scroll down and tap Export Chat, then choose Without Media. On Android, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then More and Export chat, and choose Without media. Save the resulting .zip or .txt file and open it with this analyzer.
Is it safe to analyze my chat here?
Yes. The file is read and analyzed by JavaScript in your own browser. No message, name or statistic is uploaded, stored or sent anywhere, and the page keeps working if you disconnect from the internet after it loads.
Why does the analyzer show wrong dates?
Exports use your phone's date format, and a date like 03/04/24 can mean 3 April or March 4. The analyzer picks the order that fits all the dates in the file, but if it guesses wrong, choose Day first or Month first in the Date format menu.
Can it read group chats and other languages?
Yes. Group chats with any number of participants work, and messages in any language are counted. Top words remove common English filler words; words in other languages are shown as they are. Media placeholders such as <Media omitted> are detected in several languages.
How is the reply time calculated?
Whenever a message follows a message from a different person within 12 hours, the gap counts as a reply time for the person who wrote it. The table shows each person's median reply time, which is less affected by the occasional slow reply than an average.
What counts as starting a conversation?
A message sent after at least 6 hours of silence in the chat, or the very first message, counts as a conversation start for its sender.
Is this tool made by WhatsApp?
No. It is an independent free tool that reads the standard text export WhatsApp creates. WhatsApp is a trademark of its owner.
