A simple formula for an 80-character bio
| Part | Purpose | Example | Characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who / what | Tells viewers what you post | ๐ณ Easy dinners in 15 minutes | 28 |
| Reason to follow | Sets an expectation | New recipe every Friday | 23 |
| Next step | Points to a link or contact | Shop my faves ๐ | 15 |
| Total with two line breaks | 68 | ||
How characters are counted
- Letters, numbers, spaces and line breaks: one character each.
- Emojis: usually shown as one character, but many are stored as two or more code units, and combined emojis (skin tones, families, flags) can be longer.
- Fancy fonts: styled letters are separate Unicode symbols outside the basic range, stored as two code units each. The editor shows both counts so you can stay safely under the limit.
Tips for a bio that converts viewers into followers
- Match your content. If your videos are recipes, the bio should say recipes, not just โliving my best lifeโ.
- Use your most-searched words. Words like โeasy recipesโ or โstudy tipsโ help people understand your profile at a glance.
- Keep emojis purposeful. One or two emojis that represent your niche work better than a long string.
- Update it. Change your bio when you start a new series, launch something or change your posting schedule.
- Be accurate. Only promise a posting schedule you can keep.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a TikTok bio have?
A TikTok bio is limited to 80 characters, including spaces, line breaks and emojis. That is short, so most good bios say what you post in a few words and add one call to action.
Do fancy fonts count as more characters?
Styled letters such as ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ or ๐ผ๐ฌ๐ป๐ฒ๐น๐ฝ come from the Unicode math alphabet. Each looks like one character but is stored as two UTF-16 code units, like most emojis. If TikTok says your bio is too long even though it shows 80 or fewer characters, remove some styled letters or emojis.
What should I put in my TikTok bio?
Say who you are or what you post, give people a reason to follow (what they will get, how often you post) and add a simple next step such as a link or a collab contact. Keep it specific to your niche so new viewers immediately know what to expect.
Can I add line breaks to my TikTok bio?
Yes, you can press Enter in the bio field to start a new line, and each line break counts as one character. Choose the One line layout if you prefer a compact bio.
Can I put a link in my TikTok bio?
A clickable website link has its own field, which TikTok makes available to some accounts, such as business accounts or creators who meet its requirements. You can still mention โlink belowโ in your bio when that field is enabled.
Will screen readers read fancy fonts correctly?
Often not. Many screen readers read styled Unicode letters as symbols or skip them. Use fancy fonts sparingly, for your name or one word, and keep the main message in normal text. The Remove fonts button converts styled letters back to plain ones.
