Dot Art Generator
Upload a picture or type a word and get dot art built from braille Unicode characters (⣿ ⣶ ⡇) that you can paste into chats and comments. Fine-tune the width, threshold and dithering and see the result instantly; nothing leaves your browser.

Images are processed in your browser and never uploaded. Each braille character holds a 2×4 grid of dots, so 40 characters wide equals 80 dots across.
How to use the Dot Art Generator
- Pick a source: stay on Image to dot art and choose, drop or paste a picture, or switch to Text to dot art and type a word.
- Set the width in characters. Smaller art fits chat limits; wider art shows more detail.
- Adjust the look: keep Auto threshold for logos and silhouettes, or try Floyd–Steinberg or Atkinson dithering for photos.
- Check the limits under the preview, and tick Invert if you will post on a dark theme.
- Copy the dot art (or copy it inside a code block) and paste it into Discord, Twitch, YouTube or anywhere that accepts Unicode text.
How braille characters become pixels
Unicode reserves the block U+2800–U+28FF for all 256 combinations of an eight-dot braille cell. The dots are numbered 1–8 and each one is a bit: the character for any pattern is U+2800 + bits. That makes the block a perfect 2×4 pixel tile, and a grid of these characters is a tiny monochrome bitmap.
| Dot position | Dot number | Bit value (hex) |
|---|---|---|
| Left column, row 1 | 1 | 0x01 |
| Left column, row 2 | 2 | 0x02 |
| Left column, row 3 | 3 | 0x04 |
| Right column, row 1 | 4 | 0x08 |
| Right column, row 2 | 5 | 0x10 |
| Right column, row 3 | 6 | 0x20 |
| Left column, row 4 | 7 | 0x40 |
| Right column, row 4 | 8 | 0x80 |
Examples: all eight dots give 0xFF, so U+28FF ⣿. Only the left column (dots 1, 2, 3, 7) gives 0x47, so U+2847 ⡇. No dots give U+2800, the braille blank ⠀, which looks empty but is not a space character.
Settings that matter most
| Picture type | Width | Threshold | Dithering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logo, icon, silhouette | 25–40 | Auto | None |
| Cartoon or anime face | 35–50 | Auto, then nudge | None or Atkinson |
| Photo of a person or pet | 45–70 | Auto | Floyd–Steinberg |
| Word or short name | 30–60 | Auto | None |
Tips for clean results
- High-contrast images with a plain background convert best. Crop away busy backgrounds first.
- The auto threshold uses Otsu's method, which picks the brightness that best separates dark and light pixels. Move the slider to add or remove detail.
- Dark-mode chats show dots in light text on a dark background, so the picture looks like a negative. Tick Invert to compensate.
- Braille characters are not equally wide in every font. The art lines up best in apps that render them at a fixed width, such as Discord and most phones; check how it looks before posting widely.
Frequently asked questions
What is dot art?
Dot art (also called braille art) is a picture made from Unicode braille pattern characters such as ⣿, ⣶ and ⡇. Each character contains up to eight dots in a 2-wide by 4-tall grid, so text built from them works like a tiny black-and-white bitmap that you can paste as plain text.
How does the image to braille conversion work?
The image is resized so that every 2×4 block of pixels matches one character, converted to grayscale, and compared with a brightness threshold. Dark pixels become raised dots. The eight dots map to bits of the braille block starting at U+2800, so each block becomes exactly one character.
Why does my dot art look wrong in Discord?
Three things usually cause it: the message is longer than 2,000 characters (4,000 with Nitro), the app trims leading blank characters, or you use a dark theme where dots appear light. Lower the width, use the braille blank or single-dot option for empty cells, and tick Invert for dark themes.
What does dithering do?
Dithering simulates gray shades with patterns of dots. Without it, every pixel is just on or off, which suits logos and silhouettes. Floyd–Steinberg and Atkinson spread the rounding error to neighboring pixels, giving smoother shading for photos, while ordered dithering produces a regular crosshatch pattern.
Is braille dot art readable by blind users?
No. The characters come from the braille block, but dot art arranges them as a picture, so a screen reader or braille display outputs meaningless letters. When accessibility matters, add a short text description alongside the art.
Will my image be uploaded?
No. The picture is decoded and converted entirely in your browser with the Canvas API. Nothing is sent to a server, so private photos stay on your device.
What width should I use?
For Discord, 30–45 characters wide fits most images under the 2,000-character limit. For YouTube comments or text files you can go up to 120 characters for more detail. Twitch chat does not keep line breaks, so use the one-line copy, keep the total under 500 characters and test it: rows only line up when they match your chat's wrap width.
