YouTube Tag Generator
Enter your video title and main keywords to get a list of tag ideas, including long-tail variations. Select the tags you like and the counter keeps you within YouTube's 500-character limit.
How to use the YouTube Tag Generator
- Type your video title exactly as you plan to publish it.
- Add your main keywords, separated by commas, most important first.
- Choose long-tail modifiers such as tutorial, for beginners or the year.
- Press Generate tags. The best ideas are selected automatically up to 500 characters.
- Click tags to add or remove them, then press Copy tags and paste them into YouTube Studio.
How the 500-character tag limit is counted
YouTube Studio adds up three things: the characters of every tag, one character for each comma between tags, and two extra characters for each tag that contains a space (YouTube stores those with quotes around them). The generator uses the same rule, so the counter matches what YouTube Studio shows.
| Tags | Calculation | Counted characters |
|---|---|---|
| baking | 6 | 6 |
| baking, sourdough bread | 6 + 1 comma + (15 + 2 quotes) | 24 |
| baking, sourdough bread, bread tutorial | 24 + 1 comma + (14 + 2 quotes) | 41 |
Long-tail modifiers and when to use them
| Modifier | Example tag | Best for |

| how to | how to bake sourdough bread | Step-by-step and instructional videos |
| tutorial | sourdough bread tutorial | Software, crafts, cooking, music lessons |
| for beginners | sourdough bread for beginners | Intro videos that assume no prior knowledge |

Tips for better YouTube tags
- Put your single most important keyword first; it should also appear in your title.
- Include common alternative names and spellings people might search for.
- Prefer specific phrases over single broad words like “video” or “funny”.
- Only use tags that truly describe the video. Misleading tags can break YouTube's spam policies.
- Spend more effort on the title, thumbnail and first lines of the description; they matter more than tags.
Frequently asked questions
What is the character limit for YouTube tags?
YouTube allows up to 500 characters of tags per video. The count includes the commas between tags, and a tag that contains spaces counts two extra characters because YouTube wraps it in quotes.
Do YouTube tags still matter?
Tags play a small role compared with your title, thumbnail and description. They are most useful for common misspellings, alternative names and closely related phrases, so a handful of relevant tags is better than filling the limit with loosely related ones.
How many tags should I use?
There is no fixed number. Aim for 5 to 15 relevant tags: your main keyword first, then a few specific long-tail variations and related terms. Avoid unrelated or misleading tags, which go against YouTube's policies.
What are long-tail tags?
Long-tail tags are longer, more specific phrases such as sourdough bread for beginners instead of just bread. They have less competition and describe exactly what the video covers.
Does this tool use YouTube data or an API?
No. Tag ideas are built in your browser from the words you enter, combined with common search modifiers. Nothing is sent to YouTube or any server.
How do I add tags to my YouTube video?
In YouTube Studio open the video, select Details, click Show more and paste the comma-separated tags into the Tags box. YouTube splits them at the commas automatically.
