How to calculate a tip
The formula is simple: tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100, and total = bill + tip. To split it, divide the total by the number of people.
Example: a $84 dinner for 3 people with an 18% tip. The tip is 84 × 0.18 = $15.12, the total is $99.12, and each person pays 99.12 ÷ 3 = $33.04.

Typical tipping in the US
| Service | Common tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15–20% (20%+ for great service) |
| Bar | $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, at least a few dollars |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15–20% |
| Hair salon or barber | 15–20% |
| Coffee or counter service | Optional, often 10% or loose change |
Customs differ around the world. In much of Europe a service charge is often included or a smaller tip of 5–10% is usual, and in Japan tipping is generally not expected.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15% to 20% of the bill is standard for table service at restaurants, with 18% to 20% common for good service and 20% or more for excellent service. Many other countries expect less, or include a service charge, so check local custom.
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20. For a $50 bill that's $10, so the total is $60. A quick mental trick: move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, though many people simply tip on the total. Tick "Tip on the pre-tax amount" and enter the tax to calculate it that way.
How does splitting the bill work?
The calculator adds the tip to the bill and divides the total equally. If the amount doesn't divide evenly into cents, some people pay one cent less so the shares add up exactly to the total.
What does rounding up do?
It rounds each person's share up to the next whole amount, so nobody has to deal with coins. The extra money goes to the tip, and the calculator shows the effective tip percentage.
