What the numbers on your map mean
- Countries visited: sovereign countries marked as visited, out of 195. Territories you mark are shown on the map but do not change this number.
- Continents: a continent counts as soon as you have visited one place on it, including territories such as Greenland or Puerto Rico, and Antarctica if you mark it.
- World land seen: the combined land area of everything you marked as visited, as a share of all land outside Antarctica. Visiting one large country like Canada, Brazil or Australia moves this number far more than several small ones.
- Want to go: your travel bucket list, shown in amber so you can see at a glance where you are heading next.

Frequently asked questions
How many countries are there in the world?
This map counts 195 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two UN observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Places such as Taiwan, Kosovo, Greenland or Puerto Rico can also be marked, but they are listed as territories or other places and are not added to the 195 total.
How is the percentage of the world calculated?
The main percentage is simply the countries you marked as visited divided by 195. The land area figure adds up the area of the visited countries on a simplified world map and divides it by the total land area shown, excluding Antarctica, so it is an approximation.
Which continent are Russia, Turkey and Cyprus counted in?
Some countries span two continents. This map counts Russia and Cyprus in Europe and Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in Asia, which is one common convention. The continent totals adjust automatically.
Does a layover count as visiting a country?
That is up to you. Many travelers only count a country if they left the airport or spent a night there, while others count any time on the ground. Pick a rule and apply it consistently so your number stays meaningful.
Why can't I see some small countries on the map?
The world map is simplified so it loads fast, which leaves out very small island nations and microstates such as Singapore, Malta or Monaco. They appear as round markers you can click, and every country is in the searchable list below the map.
Is my map saved?
Yes. Your marks are stored in this browser's local storage on this device, and nothing is uploaded. The Copy share link button puts your country codes into a link so a friend can open your map, and you can open the same link on another device.
