Room Paint Color Visualizer
See a paint color on your own walls before you buy a sample. Upload a room photo, click a wall to select it with smart fill, then try any color or HEX code: shadows, light from windows and texture are kept so the preview looks natural.

How to use the Room Paint Color Visualizer
- Upload a photo of your room, or start with the sample room. Daylight photos taken straight on work best.
- Click a wall with Smart fill. Click other parts of the same wall color to add them. Lower the tolerance if paint spills onto furniture, raise it if gaps are left.
- Clean up edges with the Brush and Eraser. Use Undo to step back.
- Pick a paint color from the swatches, the color picker or by typing a HEX code from a paint chip. Add another wall color for an accent wall.
- Compare and save with the before/after slider or side-by-side view, then download the result or the comparison image.
Taking a photo that previews well
- Use daylight and turn off strongly colored bulbs. Warm lamps tint the whole photo and shift how every color looks.
- Shoot straight at the wall from a corner of the room so you see two walls; this makes accent wall ideas easy to compare.
- Avoid blown-out areas. Pure white patches next to a window carry no detail, so they turn very light in any color.
- Clear the clutter where you can. Fewer objects in front of the wall means fewer edges to clean up with the brush.
How the color is applied
For each wall color the tool finds the median brightness of the selected pixels. Every pixel is then repainted with the chosen color multiplied by its own brightness relative to that median, calculated in linear RGB (the way light actually adds up) rather than on raw 0–255 values. A pixel in shadow that was 60% as bright as the typical wall stays 60% as bright in the new color. The Keep shadows and light slider scales that ratio: 0% gives a flat color, 100% keeps the photo's lighting, and higher values exaggerate it. Edges are softened over a few pixels so the paint meets trim and ceilings cleanly.
Choosing a wall color: quick reference
| Color family | Typical effect | Works well in |
|---|---|---|
| Warm whites and creams | Bright, soft, makes rooms feel open | Living rooms, hallways, north-facing rooms |
| Greige and taupe | Neutral backdrop that suits wood and mixed decor | Open-plan spaces, rental-friendly makeovers |
| Sage and soft greens | Calm, natural, pairs with plants and wood | Bedrooms, kitchens, home offices |
| Dusty and light blues | Cool and restful, recedes visually | Bedrooms, bathrooms, south-facing rooms |
| Navy, charcoal, forest green | Dramatic and cozy, hides wall imperfections | Accent walls, dining rooms, studies |
| Terracotta and mustard | Warm, earthy and energetic | Accent walls, entryways, living spaces |
Light reflectance matters too: dark colors absorb more light, so a dark wall in a small room with one window will look darker in real life than in a bright photo. Once you have picked a color, use the Paint Calculator to work out how many gallons you need.
Frequently asked questions
How does the visualizer keep the lighting of the room?
It measures how bright each selected pixel is compared with the typical brightness of that wall, then applies the new color with the same relative brightness in linear light. Areas in shadow stay darker and areas near a window stay brighter, so texture and light falloff carry over to the new color.
Will the color look exactly like the real paint?
It is a close preview, not an exact match. Screens, camera white balance, the light in your room and the paint's sheen all change how a color looks. Use the visualizer to narrow your choices, then test a real sample patch on the wall in daylight and at night.
Where do I find the HEX code of a paint color?
Many paint brands list an approximate HEX or RGB value on the color's web page. You can also use an image color picker on a photo of the paint chip. Type the code into the HEX field and press Enter or simply keep typing; the preview updates as soon as the code is valid.
Why did smart fill select part of my sofa or ceiling?
Smart fill grows the selection from where you click across pixels of similar color. If a neighboring surface has a very similar color, the fill can leak into it. Press Undo, lower the tolerance and click again, or erase the extra area with the Eraser.
Does it work with dark walls?
Yes. The tool uses the wall's own shading pattern, so even a dark or colorful wall can be previewed in a light color. Very dark or heavily shadowed photos lose texture detail, so a brighter photo gives a better preview.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is processed with your browser's canvas on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the page discards it.
