How to use the Passer Rating Calculator
Choose the rating system: NFL passer rating, NCAA passing efficiency, or both.
Enter completions and attempts for the game, season or career.
Enter passing yards, touchdown passes and interceptions. Yards can be negative.
Press Calculate rating to see the rating and the working with your numbers.
Check the breakdown table to see which part of the game helped or hurt the rating most.
NFL passer rating formula
a = (completions ÷ attempts − 0.3) × 5
b = (passing yards ÷ attempts − 3) × 0.25
c = (touchdown passes ÷ attempts) × 20
d = 2.375 − (interceptions ÷ attempts × 25)
Each of a, b, c and d is capped between 0 and 2.375, then rating = (a + b + c + d) ÷ 6 × 100
Example: 25 of 35 for 310 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. a = (0.714 − 0.3) × 5 = 2.071, b = (8.857 − 3) × 0.25 = 1.464, c = 0.0857 × 20 = 1.714, d = 2.375 − 0.0286 × 25 = 1.661. The sum is 6.911, so the rating is 6.911 ÷ 6 × 100 = 115.2.

The formula was designed so that 1.0 in each component reflected average passing when it was introduced, giving a rating of 66.7. Passing has become far more efficient since then, which is why typical ratings today are well above that mark.
NCAA passing efficiency
Efficiency = (8.4 × yards + 330 × TD + 100 × completions − 200 × INT) ÷ attempts. There are no caps, so a short, perfect game can produce a very high number. College statistics usually require a minimum number of attempts per game before a passer qualifies for national leaderboards.
Frequently asked questions
How is NFL passer rating calculated?
Four parts are worked out from per-attempt stats: a = (completions ÷ attempts − 0.3) × 5, b = (yards ÷ attempts − 3) × 0.25, c = touchdowns ÷ attempts × 20 and d = 2.375 − interceptions ÷ attempts × 25. Each part is limited to between 0 and 2.375. The rating is (a + b + c + d) ÷ 6 × 100.
What is a perfect passer rating?
158.3 is the highest possible NFL passer rating. It needs at least a 77.5% completion rate, 12.5 yards per attempt, touchdowns on 11.875% of attempts and no interceptions, which maxes out all four components at 2.375.
What is a good passer rating?
In recent NFL seasons the league-wide average has been in the high 80s to low 90s. A season rating above 100 is very good, above 110 is elite, and below 80 is generally poor. Ratings were much lower in earlier eras, so compare quarterbacks from the same period.
How is NCAA passing efficiency different?
College football uses passing efficiency = (8.4 × yards + 330 × touchdowns + 100 × completions − 200 × interceptions) ÷ attempts. It has no caps, so values above 200 are possible in a single game, and the scale runs from −731.6 to 1,261.6. High schools in the US usually use the same formula.
What is the lowest possible passer rating?
The NFL rating cannot go below 0.0, because each component is floored at 0. A quarterback with a very low completion rate, under 3 yards per attempt, no touchdowns and interceptions on 9.5% or more of attempts gets 0.0.
Is passer rating the same as QBR?
No. Passer rating uses only five box-score numbers and anyone can calculate it. QBR is a separate proprietary metric that also considers rushing, sacks, game situation and other play-by-play details, so it cannot be calculated from a simple stat line.
