Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate weight loss percentage?
Subtract your current weight from your starting weight, divide by your starting weight and multiply by 100. For example, going from 100 kg to 88 kg is (100 − 88) ÷ 100 × 100 = 12% weight loss.
How do I calculate progress toward my goal?
Divide the weight you have lost by the total you want to lose. If you started at 100 kg, now weigh 88 kg and want to reach 75 kg, you have lost 12 of 25 kg, which is 48% of the way to your goal.
Why measure weight loss as a percentage?
A percentage makes progress comparable between people of different sizes and between kg and lb. Losing 5 kg means more for someone who started at 60 kg (8.3%) than at 120 kg (4.2%).
Is losing 5% of body weight significant?
Yes. Clinical guidelines note that losing 5% to 10% of starting weight can meaningfully improve blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and joint pain for people who are overweight.
What is a healthy rate of weight loss?
About 0.5% to 1% of body weight per week is generally considered safe and sustainable for most adults, which is around 0.5 to 1 kg (1 to 2 lb) a week.
Does it matter whether I use kg or lb?
No. The percentage is the same in either unit because it is a ratio. The calculator converts your numbers when you switch units so you can use whichever your scale shows.
Why has my percentage gone down?
Day-to-day weight can change by 1 to 2 kg from water, salt and food in the gut. Weigh at the same time each day, ideally in the morning, and look at the weekly trend rather than single readings.
