Barbell Plate Calculator
Enter the weight you want to lift, your bar and the plates you have, and see exactly which plates to load on each side, with a color diagram. Works in kilograms or pounds, with collars and limited plate sets, plus warm-up percentages.
Standard Olympic bar 45 lb; women's bar 35 lb
Add ×N to limit a size, e.g. 45x4, 2.5x1
Men's Olympic bar 20 kg; women's bar 15 kg
Add ×N to limit a size, e.g. 25x4, 1.25x1
Competition collars are 2.5 kg each
How to use the Barbell Plate Calculator
- Choose kg or lb.
- Enter the target weight and your bar weight.
- Edit the plate list to match your gym; add ×N to limit how many of a size you have per side.
- Add collar weight if you use heavy collars.
- Read the plates per side, check the diagram and use the warm-up table.
Plate math formula
Weight per side = (target − bar − collars) ÷ 2. Then fill each side with the largest plates that fit, working down to the smallest. Example: 100 kg on a 20 kg bar → (100 − 20) ÷ 2 = 40 kg per side = 25 + 15 kg.
Common loads
| Total (lb, 45 lb bar) | Per side | Total (kg, 20 kg bar) | Per side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 135 lb | 45 | 60 kg | 20 |
| 185 lb | 45 + 25 | 80 kg | 25 + 5 |
| 225 lb | 45 + 45 | 100 kg | 25 + 15 |
| 275 lb | 45 + 45 + 25 | 120 kg | 25 + 25 |
| 315 lb | 45 + 45 + 45 | 140 kg | 25 + 25 + 10 |
| 405 lb | 4 × 45 | 180 kg | 3 × 25 + 5 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate plates per side?
Subtract the bar (and collars) from the target and divide by two. For 225 lb on a 45 lb bar: (225 − 45) ÷ 2 = 90 lb per side, which is two 45 lb plates on each side.
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard men's Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (about 44 lb, often rounded to 45 lb in US gyms). A women's Olympic bar is 15 kg (33 lb, often called 35 lb). Technique bars, EZ curl bars and trap bars vary, so check the bar's label.
What if I cannot make the exact weight?
The calculator finds the heaviest load that does not go over the target with the plates you listed and shows how far short it is. Adding small fractional plates such as 1.25 kg or 2.5 lb lets you hit more exact weights.
What do the plate colors mean?
Competition kilogram plates follow a standard color code: 25 kg red, 20 kg blue, 15 kg yellow, 10 kg green and 5 kg white, with smaller change plates in red, blue, yellow, green, white and silver. Pound plates usually have no standard color; the diagram uses colors only to tell sizes apart.
Should I include collars?
Spring clips weigh very little and are usually ignored. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each (5 kg per pair), so in powerlifting meets they count toward the total. Enter the collar weight to include it.
How do I load plates on the bar?
Load the heaviest plates first, closest to the center, and the lightest on the outside, the same on both sides, then secure them with collars. This keeps the bar balanced and makes it easier to change weights.
