Frequently asked questions
How much money will I save if I quit smoking?
Multiply cigarettes per day by the price per cigarette (pack price ÷ cigarettes per pack). At 15 a day and $9.50 for 20, that is $7.13 a day, about $2,600 a year and over $26,000 in ten years before any interest.
What happens to your body after you quit smoking?
According to the World Health Organization, heart rate and blood pressure drop within 20 minutes, carbon monoxide in the blood returns to normal within 12 hours, circulation and lung function improve within 2 to 12 weeks, and coughing and shortness of breath decrease over 1 to 9 months.
How long until heart disease risk drops after quitting?
The WHO states that one year after quitting, the risk of coronary heart disease is about half that of a smoker, and after 15 years it is the same as that of a non-smoker.
Does the calculator count partial days?
Yes. Time since quitting is measured from midnight on your quit date to now, so money saved and cigarettes not smoked grow through the day.
How is the invested amount calculated?
Each month's savings are treated as a deposit growing at your chosen annual return, compounded monthly: FV = P × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r, where P is the monthly saving, r the monthly rate and n the number of months. Real investment returns vary and can be negative.
Where can I get help to quit smoking?
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist, or contact a free quitline: in the US call 1-800-QUIT-NOW, in the UK use the NHS Smokefree service. Combining counselling with approved stop-smoking aids greatly improves the chance of success.
