Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the area of a pizza?
For a round pizza, area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A 12 inch pizza has about 113 square inches and a 16 inch pizza about 201 square inches. A square pizza's area is side × side.
Is one large pizza better than two mediums?
Often yes. Area grows with the square of the diameter, so one 18 inch pizza (254 sq in) has more pizza than two 12 inch pizzas (226 sq in). Two 14 inch pizzas (308 sq in) beat one 18 inch. Compare your actual sizes and prices with the calculator.
How do I find the price per square inch?
Divide the price by the area. A 16 inch pizza for $18 costs 18 ÷ 201.1 = about $0.09 per square inch. The lowest price per square inch is the best value.
Why does a slightly bigger pizza give so much more food?
Because area depends on the diameter squared. Going from 12 to 14 inches is only 2 inches more across but 36 percent more pizza, and from 12 to 16 inches is 78 percent more.
Should I include the crust?
By default the calculator uses the whole pizza. If you only care about the topped part, enter the crust width; it is removed from every edge before the area is calculated, which makes small pizzas look even worse value.
Is a square pizza bigger than a round one of the same size?
Yes. A 14 inch square pizza has 196 sq in, while a 14 inch round pizza has about 154 sq in, so the square is about 27 percent bigger.
