How to use the Party Drink Calculator
Enter the number of adults and kids and how many hours the party lasts.
Choose the weather: guests drink about a quarter more on a hot day outdoors.
Set the drink mix as percentages. Set a drink to 0 to leave it out; tick wine and beer only for adult events where it is legal and appropriate.
Adjust the safety margin and whether you will chill drinks in coolers.
Read the shopping list and copy it or download it as CSV.
How the drink amounts are calculated
Drinks per guest = 2 in the first hour + 1 per additional hour
That number is multiplied by the number of guests and your safety margin, then split by your drink mix. Kids' drinks go only to soda, water and punch. Each drink is then converted into what you can actually buy.

Tips for party drinks
Buy a variety pack: regular and diet soda, plus at least one caffeine-free choice.
Put water out first on hot days; guests reach for it more than for sweet drinks.
Use a drink dispenser for punch or lemonade and freeze some in ice cube trays so it does not get watered down.
Keep extra ice in a separate cooler just for cups, not with the cans.
Serve alcohol responsibly: only to guests of legal age, with plenty of non-alcoholic options and food, and safe rides home.
How many drinks per person should I plan for a party?
A widely used rule is 2 drinks per guest in the first hour and 1 drink per guest for every hour after that. A 4-hour party is 5 drinks per guest. On a hot day or outdoors in summer plan about 25% more, mostly water.
How much soda do I need for a party?
Count the soda servings and divide by 8, because a 2-liter bottle (67.6 oz) fills about 8 cups of 8 oz poured over ice. For 50 guests at a 4-hour party with soda as 35% of drinks, that is about 96 servings, or 12 two-liter bottles.
How much ice do I need for a party?
Plan about 1 lb of ice per guest for drinks, or 1.5 lb in hot weather. If you chill cans and bottles in coolers, add roughly 0.4 lb per container. Party ice usually comes in 10 lb bags; buy a bag or two extra on hot days.
How much punch do I need?
A gallon of punch or lemonade serves about 16 cups of 8 oz, or about 21 smaller 6 oz punch cups. Make a little extra concentrate and keep it cold so you can refill the bowl.
How much coffee for a party?
One pound of ground coffee makes about 45 cups of 6 oz at a standard strength. Coffee is mostly drunk with dessert, so it is usually a small share of the total. Offer decaf and tea alongside.
How many bottles of wine for a party?
A 750 ml bottle pours 5 glasses of 5 oz. If 20 adults each drink 3 glasses of wine over the evening, you need 60 glasses, or 12 bottles. Always provide non-alcoholic choices, never serve guests under the legal drinking age, and help guests get home safely.
Does this calculator include food?
No, it covers drinks, ice and cups. Use the party food calculator for appetizers, mains, sides and dessert.
