Oven Temperature Converter
Convert any oven temperature between Celsius, Fahrenheit and gas mark, with the fan oven equivalent and a full chart for your kitchen.
Gas marks accept fractions like 1/4 or ½. Fan ovens run hotter, so recipes for them are about 20 °C (25 °F) lower.

The highlighted row is the closest standard setting. "°C (recipes)" is the rounded value printed in most UK and European cookbooks.
How to use the Oven Temperature Converter
- Type the temperature from your recipe, for example 180, 350 or 1/2.
- Choose the unit it is in: °C, °F or gas mark.
- Say whether the recipe is for a fan oven. If it is, the converter adds the fan offset back to find the conventional temperature.
- Read the results in Celsius, Fahrenheit, gas mark and fan oven settings. The closest row in the chart is highlighted.
- Tap any chart row or a quick button to convert a standard setting instantly.
Oven temperature formulas
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32. Example: 180 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 356 °F, which recipes round to 350 °F.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Example: (400 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 204.4 °C, usually written 200 °C.
- Gas mark to Fahrenheit: from gas mark 1 upward, °F = 250 + 25 × gas mark. Gas mark ½ is 250 °F and gas mark ¼ is 225 °F.
- Fan (convection) oven: lower a conventional temperature by about 20 °C or 25 °F, or keep the temperature and shorten the cooking time by about 10 to 25 percent.
Celsius to Fahrenheit oven chart
| °C | °F | Fan °C | °C | °F | Fan °C |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 212 | 80 | 190 | 374 | 170 |
| 120 | 248 | 100 | 200 | 392 | 180 |
| 140 | 284 | 120 | 210 | 410 | 190 |
| 150 | 302 | 130 | 220 | 428 | 200 |
| 160 | 320 | 140 | 230 | 446 | 210 |
| 170 | 338 | 150 | 240 | 464 | 220 |
| 180 | 356 | 160 | 250 | 482 | 230 |
Recipes rarely use the exact conversion. A cake baked at 180 °C in Europe is usually listed as 350 °F in the US because oven thermostats are only accurate to about ±10 °C anyway.
Tips for accurate oven temperatures
- Use an oven thermometer. Many home ovens run 10 to 25 °C hotter or cooler than the dial says.
- Preheat fully. Most ovens need 10 to 15 minutes to reach a stable temperature, longer for baking stones.
- Check whether the recipe already assumes a fan. Many UK recipes give both values, for example "180 °C (160 °C fan), gas mark 4". Do not subtract 20 °C twice.
- Dark or glass pans brown faster. Reduce the temperature by about 10 °C (25 °F) when using them for cakes.
Frequently asked questions
What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?
180 °C is exactly 356 °F. Recipes round it to 350 °F, which is gas mark 4. In a fan oven use about 160 °C.
What is gas mark 4 in Celsius and Fahrenheit?
Gas mark 4 is 350 °F, which is 176.7 °C. British recipes round it to 180 °C, or 160 °C in a fan oven. It is described as a moderate oven and suits most cakes and bakes.
How do I convert a recipe for a fan oven?
Lower the conventional temperature by about 20 °C or 25 °F. For example, 200 °C conventional becomes 180 °C fan. Check the food a little early, because fan ovens cook more evenly and slightly faster.
Is convection the same as a fan oven?
Yes. Convection oven is the usual US term and fan oven or fan-assisted oven the UK term. Both use a fan to circulate hot air, so the same 20 °C (25 °F) reduction applies.
How do gas marks work?
Gas marks are a UK oven scale. From gas mark 1 (275 °F) each step adds 25 °F, up to gas mark 10 at 500 °F. Below that are gas mark ½ (250 °F) and gas mark ¼ (225 °F).
What temperature is a moderate oven?
A moderate oven is about 350 °F, 180 °C or gas mark 4. A moderately hot oven is 375 to 400 °F (190 to 200 °C), and a hot oven is about 425 °F (220 °C).
