Cake Servings Calculator
Find out how many people your cake will feed. Choose round, square or rectangular pans, enter the size of each tier and pick wedding, party or sheet-cake slices. You get servings per tier, the total, and whether it covers your guest list.
Diameter or side for round and square, e.g. 6, 8, 10. Length × width for rectangles, e.g. 9x13.
How to use the Cake Servings Calculator
- Choose the pan shape: round, square or rectangle.
- Enter each tier's size, separated by commas (6, 8, 10 or 9x13 for a sheet cake).
- Pick the slice size: 1 × 2 in for weddings, 1.5 × 2 in for parties or 2 × 2 in for sheet cakes.
- Set the tier height if your tiers are taller than 4 inches.
- Enter your guest count to see if the cake is big enough, and tick the box if the top tier will be saved.
How cake servings are calculated
A serving is defined by its footprint on top of the cake, assuming a standard tier height of 3 to 4 inches (two or three layers with filling):
Servings = top area ÷ slice area
- Round: area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A 10 in round is π × 5² = 78.5 in².
- Square: area = side × side. A 10 in square is 100 in².
- Rectangle: area = length × width. A 9 × 13 in pan is 117 in².
A wedding slice (1 × 2 in) covers 2 in², so the 10 in round gives 78.5 ÷ 2 = 39 servings. Tall tiers (5–6 in) give about 1.5 times as many portions because each slice can be cut in half horizontally, and double-barrel tiers about twice as many.

Tips for planning a tiered cake
- Keep a 2 in step between tiers (6-8-10 or 6-9-12) so each tier has room for decoration and support dowels.
- Use a kitchen cake: a plain sheet cake kept in the kitchen and cut to the same slice size is an affordable way to add servings without a bigger display cake.
- Square tiers serve more than round tiers of the same width, about 27% more, because they have no curved edges.
Frequently asked questions
How many servings are in a cake?
It depends on the top area of the cake and the slice size. This calculator divides the area by the area of one slice: 2 square inches for a 1 × 2 in wedding slice, 3 for a 1.5 × 2 in party slice and 4 for a 2 × 2 in sheet-cake square, all for tiers about 4 inches tall.
How many people does an 8 inch round cake feed?
A standard 8 inch round, 4 inches tall, gives about 25 wedding slices (1 × 2 in), 16 party slices (1.5 × 2 in) or 12 generous 2 × 2 in pieces.
What size wedding cake do I need for 100 guests?
With 1 × 2 in wedding slices, a 3-tier 8-10-12 inch round cake gives about 120 servings and a 6-10-14 inch round gives about 129. A 4-tier 6-8-10-12 round cake gives about 134 servings. Enter your own sizes above to check.
How many servings in a 9x13 sheet cake?
A 9 × 13 inch cake has 117 square inches of top, which gives about 29 servings cut in 2 × 2 in squares, 39 party slices or 58 small wedding-size pieces.
Why is a wedding slice smaller than a party slice?
Wedding cakes are usually served after a full meal and are cut as tall, narrow 1 × 2 in fingers. Party and birthday cakes are often the main dessert, so slices are wider.
Should I order exactly one serving per guest?
Many bakers suggest planning servings for 90% to 100% of guests at a wedding, since some guests skip cake, and adding a few extra for vendors. For a birthday party, plan at least one serving per guest.
Do these numbers match published cake serving charts?
They are close. Charts from bakeware makers are based on the same slice sizes but sometimes round differently, especially for small rounds and party slices. The calculator uses exact areas so you can see how every size compares.
