Butter Converter
Convert any amount of butter between US sticks, cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, grams, ounces, pounds and European 250 g blocks. Every unit is shown at once, along with an oil substitute and a sticks-to-grams chart.
How to use the Butter Converter
- Enter the amount of butter from your recipe.
- Choose the unit it is in, such as sticks, cups or a 250 g block.
- Choose the unit you want, for example grams for a kitchen scale.
- Read the result and the same amount in every other unit, with handy fractions like ½ or ¾.
- Tick the salted butter box if you are using salted butter in a recipe written for unsalted.
How butter conversions work
Every butter unit traces back to the US stick, which is defined by weight:
1 stick = ½ cup = 8 tablespoons = 24 teaspoons = 4 oz = 113.4 g
The converter turns your amount into grams first, then divides by the weight of the target unit. Example: a 250 g European block ÷ 113.4 g per stick = 2.2 sticks, and 250 g ÷ 14.17 g per tablespoon = 17.6 tablespoons.
Cup and spoon measures assume solid butter packed level. Melted butter takes up about the same volume, so 1 cup of melted butter still weighs about 227 g.

- United States: 1 lb boxes of four 4 oz (113 g) sticks; Elgin (East Coast) sticks are long and thin, Western-style sticks short and wide, but both weigh the same.
- Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand: mostly 250 g blocks, with 125 g and 200 g sizes in some countries.
- Canada: usually 454 g (1 lb) blocks without stick divisions.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams is a stick of butter?
A standard US stick of butter weighs 4 ounces, which is 113.4 grams (often rounded to 113 g or 115 g). It equals ½ cup or 8 tablespoons.
How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?
There are 8 tablespoons in one US stick of butter, and each tablespoon weighs about 14.2 g. The wrapper is usually marked in tablespoons.
How many cups is 250 g of butter?
A 250 g block, the common size in Europe, the UK and Australia, is about 1.1 US cups, or 2.2 US sticks, or roughly 17½ tablespoons.
How much does a cup of butter weigh?
One US cup of butter weighs about 227 g (8 oz), which is two sticks. Butter is slightly less dense than water, about 0.96 g per ml.
Can I replace butter with oil?
In cakes, muffins and quick breads you can usually use about ¾ as much oil by volume as butter, so ¾ cup of oil for 1 cup of butter. Oil does not work well where butter must be creamed with sugar or kept cold, such as cookies with a firm texture, pie crust or puff pastry.
What is the difference between salted and unsalted butter in recipes?
Salted butter contains roughly 1.5% to 2% salt, about ¼ teaspoon per stick. If a recipe calls for unsalted butter and you only have salted, reduce the added salt by about ¼ teaspoon per stick used.
Is a European stick the same as a US stick?
No. US butter is sold in 4 oz (113 g) sticks, while most of Europe sells 250 g blocks (some 125 g or 200 g). A 250 g block equals about 2.2 US sticks.
