Pounds to gallons formula
Pounds measure weight and gallons measure volume, so you divide by the liquid's density in pounds per gallon:
US gallons = pounds ÷ density (lb/gal)
Water weighs about 8.345 lb per US gallon, so 50 lb of water is 50 ÷ 8.345 = 5.99 gallons. Propane is much lighter at roughly 4.2 lb/gal, which is why a "20 lb" grill tank holds only about 20 ÷ 4.2 = 4.76 gallons. Honey is heavier than water, so 60 lb of honey fills just over 5 gallons.

Typical values near 60 °F. Water is 8.345 lb/gal at its densest (about 39 °F) and about 8.33 lb/gal at room temperature. A UK gallon is 1.201 US gallons, so the same weight fills fewer imperial gallons.
Tips
Propane is filled by weight, used by volume. Tanks are only filled to about 80% of their volume to leave room for expansion, so a 20 lb cylinder is physically larger than 4.8 gallons.
Use specific gravity for anything else. Multiply the specific gravity from a safety data sheet by 8.345 to get lb/gal and enter it as a custom density.
Bulk buying. Syrups, oils and chemicals are often priced per pound; convert to gallons to compare with per-gallon prices or tank capacity.
Need the opposite? The gallons to pounds converter turns a volume into a weight for shipping or payload checks.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert pounds to gallons?
Divide the weight in pounds by the liquid's density in pounds per gallon. For water, gallons = pounds ÷ 8.345, so 25 lb of water is about 3 gallons.
How many gallons is 20 lb of propane?
At about 4.2 lb per gallon, 20 lb of propane is roughly 4.7 to 4.8 gallons. That is what a standard grill cylinder holds when full.
How many gallons is 100 lb of water?
100 ÷ 8.345 = about 11.98 US gallons.
How many pounds is a gallon of milk?
Whole milk weighs about 8.6 lb per US gallon, a little more than water, so 8.6 lb of milk is about 1 gallon.
Does temperature change the result?
Yes. Liquids expand as they warm, so each gallon weighs a little less and the same weight takes more gallons. The effect is small for water but large for propane.
How do I use specific gravity instead of lb/gal?
Multiply the specific gravity by 8.345 to get pounds per gallon, then enter it as a custom density. A liquid with specific gravity 1.2 weighs about 10.01 lb/gal.
