  5. Press Copy caption and paste it into TikTok.

TikTok changes its limits from time to time and tests longer captions with some accounts, but 2,200 characters is the safe target that works everywhere. If the app rejects a caption that fits here, trim a few characters and try again.

What counts as a character

  • Letters, digits and punctuation: one character each.
  • Spaces and line breaks: one character each. Two spaces in a row count twice.
  • Hashtags and mentions: every character including the # and @ symbols.
  • Emojis: one visible emoji can be made of several Unicode code points. πŸ‘ is one code point, πŸ‘πŸ½ (with skin tone) is two and πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ (family) is five. The default count treats each as one character; the strict mode counts code points.

Example: the caption Try this πŸ‘πŸ½ #recipe is 18 characters as you see them and 19 code points.

Writing captions that work

  • Put the hook first. Only the first line or two shows on the video before viewers tap to expand.
  • Use a few specific hashtags that describe the video rather than a wall of generic tags.
  • Ask a question to invite comments, and mention collaborators with @ so they are notified.
  • Run the space cleaner before posting: stray double spaces and blank lines waste characters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TikTok caption character limit?

TikTok video captions can be up to 2,200 characters long. The limit includes letters, spaces, line breaks, emojis, hashtags and @mentions.

Do hashtags count towards the TikTok character limit?

Yes. Hashtags are part of the caption, so every # sign and letter counts towards the 2,200 characters. There is no separate hashtag allowance.

How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?

TikTok does not publish a fixed hashtag limit other than the caption length, but three to five relevant hashtags are usually recommended. A long list of unrelated tags does not help your video reach the right audience.

How are emojis counted?

By default this counter counts characters the way you see them, so one emoji is one character even if it is built from several Unicode code points, such as a skin-tone or family emoji. Switch to Unicode code points for a stricter count; the code point total is always shown as well.

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Yes, every space and line break counts as a character. The space cleaner removes double spaces, spaces at the start and end of lines and empty lines so you do not waste characters.

Is my caption stored online?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The draft is only remembered in your own browser so it is still there if you reload the page.
