About Cooking Measurement Converters

Kitchen conversions where volume and weight meet, such as cups of flour to grams or sticks of butter to tablespoons. Because a cup of flour weighs less than a cup of sugar, these converters account for the ingredient, not just the unit.

Most used here: Cups to Pounds, Cups to Sticks of Butter and Sticks of Butter to Cups.

Volume vs weight in the kitchen

Cups and spoons measure volume, grams and pounds measure weight, and the link between them depends on the ingredient. A cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 120 to 125 g, while a cup of granulated sugar is about 200 g, so a single 'cups to grams' factor can't be right for everything. These converters use ingredient-specific values.

Butter, flour and sugar

In the US one stick of butter is 1/2 cup, 8 tablespoons or about 113 g. Flour is the ingredient that varies most: spooned and leveled flour is lighter than flour scooped straight from the bag, so weighing it gives the most consistent bakes. For whole recipes, the recipe unit converter changes every line at once.
