About Data & Digital Converters
Convert storage and data-rate units such as KB, MB, GB, TB, bits and Mbps. Internet speeds are advertised in megabits, while file sizes are shown in megabytes, which is why a 100 Mbps connection downloads about 12.5 MB per second.
Most used here: Mbps to MB per Second, Number Base Converter and Data Storage Converter.
Bits, bytes and the factor of 8
Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes and download progress show megabytes (MB). One byte is 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most about 12.5 MB per second before overhead.
1000 or 1024?
Storage makers use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while Windows and some apps count in binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). That is why a '1 TB' drive shows up as about 931 GB on a PC. The converters here show which convention they use so the numbers line up with what you see on screen.
