How to convert cups to pounds
pounds = cups × grams per cup ÷ 453.592, and cups = pounds × 453.592 ÷ grams per cup. There is no single cups-to-pounds factor because each ingredient has a different density.
Example: 3 cups of all-purpose flour × 125 g = 375 g ÷ 453.592 = 0.83 lb (13.2 oz).
Dry ingredients are measured by spooning into the cup and leveling. Scooping packs flour and can add 10% to 20% more weight. Weights come from USDA household measures and standard baking charts.

Frequently asked questions
How many cups are in a pound of flour?
About 3 2/3 cups of all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled, 125 g per cup) make a pound. A 5 lb bag holds about 18 cups.
How many cups are in a pound of sugar?
About 2 1/4 cups of granulated sugar (200 g per cup). Packed brown sugar is about 2 cups per pound and powdered sugar about 3 3/4 cups.
How many cups are in a pound of butter?
2 cups. One US pound of butter is 4 sticks, each 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons, 4 oz).
How many cups of rice are in a pound?
About 2 1/2 cups of uncooked long-grain white rice (185 g per cup). It roughly triples in volume when cooked, giving about 7 to 8 cups of cooked rice.
Does a cup of water weigh a pound?
No, a US cup of water weighs about 8.3 oz (236.6 g), so a pint (2 cups) is about a pound. That is the origin of the saying 'a pint's a pound the world around', which only works for water-like liquids.
Are fluid ounces the same as ounces?
No. Fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. A cup is always 8 fluid ounces, but a cup of flour weighs only about 4.4 oz while a cup of honey weighs about 12 oz.
