Turn a recipe's cups of flour into grams for your kitchen scale. Pick the flour and how the cup was filled: a cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g when spooned and leveled but closer to 145 g when scooped from the bag.

How to use the Cups of Flour to Grams
Type the cups from your recipe, e.g. 2 1/4 or 3/4.
Choose the flour type. Different flours weigh very different amounts per cup.
Select how the cup is filled. Most modern recipes assume spoon and level.
Weigh out the grams shown, or use the chart below for other amounts.
Grams per cup by flour type
Spooned and leveled into a US cup (236.6 mL). These are typical values from US baking references; individual brands and humidity can shift them by a few grams.

Spooned vs scooped: why the method matters
Flour compresses. Dipping the cup into the bag and sweeping it level packs in roughly 15–25% more flour than spooning it in. This tool uses +20% for wheat and rye flours and +10% for almond and coconut flour, which compress less. Sifting before measuring makes a cup about 5–7% lighter.
grams = cups × grams per cup (for that flour and method)
Example: 2 ¼ cups of all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled = 2.25 × 120 = 270 g. Scooped, the same cups hold about 2.25 × 144 = 324 g, enough extra flour to make cookies dry and cakes dense.
Tips for measuring flour accurately
Use a scale when you can. Grams remove the guesswork of how a cup was filled.
Fluff before measuring. Flour settles in the bag; stir it with a spoon before filling the cup.
Use dry measuring cups, not a liquid measuring jug, so you can level the top.
Gluten-free flours (almond, coconut) behave differently from wheat flour; follow recipes written for them rather than swapping by weight.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams is 1 cup of all-purpose flour?
About 120 grams when the flour is spooned into the cup and leveled off, which is what most US recipes assume. If you scoop the cup straight into the bag it packs to roughly 140–150 g.
How many grams is 2 cups of flour?
About 240 g of all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), 254 g of bread flour or 228 g of cake flour.
Why do different flours weigh different amounts per cup?
Particle size, protein, bran and fat content change how tightly flour settles. Fine cake flour and fluffy almond flour weigh less per cup than bread flour, and coconut flour soaks up liquid very differently, so never swap them cup for cup.
What does spoon and level mean?
Stir the flour to loosen it, spoon it into the measuring cup until it mounds, then sweep the excess off with a straight edge. It gives the lightest and most repeatable cup, about 120 g for all-purpose flour.
Is a cup of flour the same in the UK and Australia?
Australia, New Zealand and Canada often use a 250 mL metric cup, about 6% bigger than the 236.6 mL US cup. Choose Metric cup to account for it. UK recipes usually give flour in grams already.
Should I sift flour before measuring?
Only when the recipe says "1 cup sifted flour". Then sift first and spoon the sifted flour into the cup, which gives a lighter cup. "1 cup flour, sifted" means measure first, then sift, so use the normal weight.
How many grams is 1 cup of almond flour?
About 96 g of blanched almond flour when spooned and leveled. Almond meal with skins is coarser and can weigh a little more.
