Estimate how much water your dog needs each day from its weight, activity level, the weather and its diet. Switch to cat mode for cats. Results are in milliliters, fluid ounces and cups, with the amount that already comes from food taken off.

How to use the Dog Water Intake Calculator
Choose dog or cat and enter the body weight in kg or lb.
Pick the life stage and main diet; wet and raw food supply part of the daily water.
Set activity and weather for today, such as a long walk on a hot day.
Press Calculate water intake to see the daily bowl amount in ml, ounces and cups.
Use the range and table as a guide and watch for sudden changes in drinking.
How the water intake is estimated
The calculator starts from a typical maintenance need of 60 ml per kg per day for dogs and 50 ml per kg per day for cats, the middle of the commonly quoted ranges (dogs about 50–70 ml/kg, cats about 40–60 ml/kg). It then multiplies by factors for activity, weather and life stage, and finally subtracts the water that comes in with the food.
bowl water = weight (kg) × base ml/kg × activity × weather × life stage × (1 − food water share)
Example: a 20 kg dog on dry kibble, normal activity, warm day: 20 × 60 × 1 × 1.2 = 1,440 ml (about 48.7 fl oz or 6.1 cups).

Frequently asked questions
How much water should a dog drink per day?
A common guideline is about 50 to 70 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day, which is close to 1 fluid ounce per pound. A 20 kg dog on dry food therefore needs roughly 1.2 liters a day. Active dogs, hot weather and nursing mothers need more.
How much water should a cat drink?
Cats need roughly 40 to 60 ml of total water per kilogram per day. A 4 kg cat needs about 200 ml in total, but a cat on wet food gets most of that from its food and may drink very little from the bowl.
Why does wet food lower the result?
Canned food is typically 70 to 80 percent water, so a pet eating mostly wet food takes in much of its daily water with meals. The calculator subtracts an estimated share for each diet type and shows what is still needed from the bowl.
Does hot weather change how much my dog should drink?
Yes. Dogs cool themselves by panting, which loses water, so in warm or hot weather and during exercise they can need 20 to 50 percent more. Always carry water on walks and hikes in the heat.
When is drinking too much or too little a concern?
A sudden, lasting change in thirst is worth a vet visit. Persistent drinking well above about 100 ml per kg per day, or a pet that stops drinking, can be a sign of illness. This calculator is a general guide, not veterinary advice.
Is 1 ounce per pound accurate?
It is a convenient rule of thumb. One fluid ounce per pound equals about 65 ml per kg, which sits inside the typical 50 to 70 ml per kg range. Small dogs often drink a bit more per pound and large dogs a bit less.
