How to use the Salary to Hourly Calculator

  1. Enter your pay and choose what it is: per hour, day, week, two weeks, half-month, month or year.
  2. Set your schedule: hours per week and days per week. 40 hours over 5 days is the default full-time week.
  3. Add extras if you have them: weekly overtime hours and rate, unpaid days off (unpaid holidays, unpaid leave) and an estimated tax rate.
  4. Read the table: every pay period is shown before adjustments, after adjustments and after the estimated tax.

Salary to hourly formulas

All conversions go through the hourly rate and the number of hours you work in a year. With a standard 40-hour week that is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.

ConvertFormulaExample (40 h/week)
Salary to hourlySalary ÷ (hours per week × 52)$52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/h
Hourly to salaryHourly × hours per week × 52$18 × 40 × 52 = $37,440/yr
Monthly to hourlyMonthly × 12 ÷ (hours per week × 52)$3,500 × 12 ÷ 2,080 = $20.19/h
Weekly to yearlyWeekly × 52$900 × 52 = $46,800/yr
Overtime payHourly × multiplier × overtime hours$20 × 1.5 × 5 h = $150/week

Paycheck frequency explained

Weekly pay gives you 52 paychecks a year. Biweekly (every other week) gives 26, so two months a year have three paychecks. Semi-monthly pay arrives twice a month, usually on the 15th and the last day, for 24 paychecks. Monthly pay is 12 paychecks. The yearly total is the same; only the size of each check changes.

All amounts are gross pay before deductions unless you enter a tax estimate. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. A full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so a $50,000 salary is $50,000 / 2,080 = $24.04 per hour.

How do I convert hourly to salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work per week and then by 52 weeks. For example, $20 per hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $41,600 per year.

What is the quick rule of thumb?

For a 40-hour week, double the hourly rate and add three zeros to get a rough yearly salary: $25 per hour is about $50,000 per year (exactly $52,000).

How is overtime calculated?

Overtime pay is the hourly rate × the overtime multiplier × the overtime hours. Time and a half (1.5×) is the most common rate. The calculator adds weekly overtime to every week you work.

What are unpaid days off?

Days you don't work and don't get paid for, such as unpaid holidays or unpaid leave. They are subtracted from the adjusted totals. Paid vacation and paid holidays should not be entered because you are still paid for them.

What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly?

Biweekly means every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, which is 24 paychecks a year, so each semi-monthly check is a little larger.

Is the take-home pay exact?

No. The tax rate is a single estimate you enter. Real paychecks depend on federal, state and local taxes, social security, benefits and retirement contributions. Check a payslip or tax authority for exact numbers.
