GST formulas
Adding GST to a price that excludes tax:
GST = amount × rate ÷ 100 Total = amount × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Removing GST from a price that already includes tax (do not just subtract the rate from the total):
Amount excl. GST = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) GST = total × rate ÷ (100 + rate)
Example: removing 18% GST from ₹1,180 gives ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so the GST is ₹180. Removing 10% GST from an Australian price of $110 gives $100 and $10 of GST (the “divide by 11” rule). For New Zealand's 15%, the GST in an inclusive price is 3/23 of it.
India: CGST, SGST and IGST
For a supply within one state, the GST rate is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST), or UTGST in a Union Territory. For a supply between states (and imports), the full rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST). The total tax is the same either way.
| GST slab | CGST + SGST | IGST | GST on ₹1,000 | ₹1,000 + GST | Excl. GST in ₹1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 2.5% + 2.5% | 5% | ₹50.00 | ₹1,050.00 | ₹952.38 |
| 12% | 6% + 6% | 12% | ₹120.00 | ₹1,120.00 | ₹892.86 |
| 18% | 9% + 9% | 18% | ₹180.00 | ₹1,180.00 | ₹847.46 |
| 28% | 14% + 14% | 28% | ₹280.00 | ₹1,280.00 | ₹781.25 |
From 22 September 2025, India's GST rationalisation moved most goods and services into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for a short list of luxury and sin goods; 12% and 28% remain in the calculator for older invoices and items that still use them. Always check the current rate for your specific HSN/SAC code.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the amount by the GST rate. For 18% GST on ₹1,000: 1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180, so the total is ₹1,180. In general, total = amount × (1 + rate/100).
How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Divide the price by (1 + rate/100). For ₹1,180 including 18% GST: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, and the GST is ₹180. Subtracting 18% of 1,180 would give the wrong answer.
What are CGST, SGST and IGST?
In India, GST on a sale within one state is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST, or UTGST in a Union Territory). For example, 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. On a sale between states the full rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST).
What are the current GST slabs in India?
Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services fall in the 5% and 18% slabs, with a 40% rate for a small set of luxury and sin goods, plus special rates such as 3% for gold and 0.25% for rough diamonds. The older 12% and 28% slabs are still available in the calculator for past invoices.
How do I work out GST in Australia?
Australian GST is 10%. To add it, multiply by 1.1. To find the GST included in a price, divide the price by 11: a $110 item contains $10 of GST.
What is the GST rate in New Zealand and Canada?
New Zealand's GST is 15% (the GST in an inclusive price is 3/23 of it). Canada charges 5% GST, or a combined HST of 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.
Is this the same as VAT?
GST and VAT work the same way: a tax on value added, charged on the sale price and credited along the supply chain. The math to add or remove it is identical.
