How to use the Dog Food Transition Schedule
Pick the start date and the length of the transition (7 days is standard; 10–14 for sensitive dogs or puppies).
Choose the plan style: 25/50/75% steps or a little more new food every day.
Enter the daily amount your dog eats now and, if different, the new food's daily amount from its bag.
Set meals per day to see how much of each food goes in every bowl.
Print the schedule or download the CSV and stick it near the food bin.

The “a little more each day” style instead raises the new food evenly every day (for example about 7% more per day on a 14-day plan), which some dogs tolerate better than bigger jumps.
How the amounts are worked out
For each day the calculator uses old food = old daily amount × old % and new food = new daily amount × new %. Using each food's own daily amount matters when the foods differ in energy: if your dog eats 2 cups of the old food but the new bag recommends 1¾ cups, day 3 of a 7-day plan at 50/50 is 1 cup old + ⅞ cup new. Amounts in cups are rounded to the nearest ⅛ cup; weigh food in grams for the most accuracy.
Tips for a smooth switch
Buy the new food before the old bag runs out; the schedule shows how much old food you still need.
Mix the two foods well so your dog can't pick out favorites.
Keep treats and table scraps to a minimum during the switch so you can tell how the new food agrees.
Watch the stool: slightly softer for a day is common, ongoing diarrhea is a reason to slow down and call your vet.
Prescription or therapeutic diets may need a different approach; follow your vet's instructions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I switch my dog to a new food?
Mix the new food into the old one gradually over about 7 days: roughly 25% new for the first two days, 50% for the next two, 75% for two more, then 100% new. A slower 10 to 14-day switch suits puppies and dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Why shouldn't I change dog food all at once?
A sudden change can upset the gut bacteria that digest food, which often causes loose stools, gas, vomiting or a dog that refuses to eat. Mixing the foods over a week gives the digestive system time to adjust.
What if my dog gets diarrhea during the switch?
Stay at the current step, or go back one step, for 2 to 3 more days before moving on. Contact your vet if diarrhea lasts more than a day or two, contains blood, or your dog is lethargic or vomiting.
Should I feed the same amount of the new food?
Not always. Foods differ in calories per cup, so check the new bag's feeding guide for your dog's weight. Enter both daily amounts and the schedule blends them, keeping the total calories about the same.
How long does it take to transition dog food?
Most dogs switch comfortably in 7 days. Puppies, senior dogs, dogs with sensitive stomachs and big changes such as dry to wet, or kibble to fresh food, often do better with 10 to 14 days.
Can I switch from puppy food to adult food the same way?
Yes. Use the same gradual mix when your puppy moves to adult food, usually around 12 months for most breeds and later for large and giant breeds; ask your vet about the right age for your dog.
