Dumpster Size Calculator
Estimate how many cubic yards and tons of debris your project will produce and which roll-off dumpster fits, from 10 to 40 yards. Measure the pile, count pickup loads or enter roof squares; the weight check warns you when heavy material, not space, decides the size.
Last updated:
1 square = 100 sq ft of roof surface.
Debris never packs perfectly; 10–20% is sensible.
Optional; blank uses typical limits per size.
How to use the Dumpster Size Calculator
- Choose the type of debris so the weight can be estimated.
- Pick how to measure: pile dimensions, pickup-truck loads, roof squares or a known volume.
- Enter the numbers, or tap a project preset like a kitchen remodel or roof tear-off.
- Add your quote's weight limit and overweight fee if you have them.
- Read the recommended size and check the weight verdict and size table.
Dumpster size formulas
- Cubic yards = length × width × height (ft) ÷ 27. Multiply a heaped mound by about 0.5.
- Weight = cubic yards × loose density (lb per cu yd); tons = lb ÷ 2,000.
- Roof tear-off: weight = squares × layers × lb per square; volume ≈ 0.5 cu yd per square per layer.
- Hauls needed = the larger of ⌈volume ÷ dumpster yards⌉ and ⌈tons ÷ weight limit⌉.
Roll-off dumpster sizes
| Size | Approx. dimensions | Pickup loads | Typical weight allowance | Common projects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 yd | 12–14 ft × 8 ft × 3–3.5 ft | ≈ 4–5 | 1–2 tons (heavy debris often ~8) | Bathroom remodel, small cleanout, concrete or dirt |
| 15 yd | 14–16 ft × 8 ft × 4 ft | ≈ 6–7 | 2–3 tons | Small kitchen, deck removal, flooring |
| 20 yd | 20–22 ft × 8 ft × 4 ft | ≈ 8–10 | 2–4 tons | Kitchen remodel, roof up to ~25 squares, garage cleanout |
| 30 yd | 20–22 ft × 8 ft × 6 ft | ≈ 12–15 | 3–5 tons | Large remodel, whole-house cleanout, additions |
| 40 yd | 20–22 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft | ≈ 16–20 | 4–6 tons | New construction, major demolition, bulky light debris |
Dimensions and weight allowances vary by hauler and region; the numbers above are typical ranges, so use your quote's figures in the calculator.
Tips for loading a dumpster
- Break down furniture and flatten boxes; air gaps waste paid-for space.
- Spread heavy material evenly across the floor instead of piling it at one end.
- Never load above the top rim: haulers will not move an overfilled container.
- Paint, solvents, batteries, tires, appliances with refrigerant and electronics are usually prohibited or charged extra.
- Check whether you need a permit to place the dumpster on the street.
Frequently asked questions
How do I figure out what size dumpster I need?
Estimate the debris volume in cubic yards (length × width × height in feet ÷ 27), add 10–20% because debris never packs perfectly, and choose the smallest dumpster with at least that many yards. Then check the weight: heavy debris can hit the tonnage limit long before the container is full.
How many cubic yards is a pickup truck load?
A standard 6.5 ft bed filled level to the top of the sides holds about 2 cubic yards, an 8 ft bed about 2.5–3 cubic yards and a 5.5 ft short bed about 1.5–2. So a 20-yard dumpster holds roughly 8–10 pickup loads.
What size dumpster do I need for a roof?
Each square (100 sq ft) of one layer of asphalt shingles weighs roughly 240 lb for 3-tab and 350 lb or more for architectural shingles. A 25-square, single-layer 3-tab roof is about 3 tons, so a 20-yard dumpster with a 3-ton limit is typical; two layers usually need a larger container or two hauls.
Can I put concrete or dirt in any dumpster?
Usually not. Broken concrete weighs around 2,000–2,700 lb per cubic yard and loose soil around 2,000–2,200, so most haulers require a small 10-yard heavy-debris container, often with a higher weight allowance (around 8 tons is common) and a fill line. Check with your hauler before loading heavy material.
What happens if my dumpster is overweight?
Each rental includes a tonnage allowance, and the landfill weight above it is billed per ton. Severely overloaded containers may not be hauled until material is removed. The calculator's weight check and fee field help you avoid surprises.
What are the dimensions of a 20-yard dumpster?
Sizes vary by hauler, but a 20-yard roll-off is commonly about 20–22 ft long, 7.5–8 ft wide and 4 ft high. 30- and 40-yard containers have a similar footprint with taller 6 ft and 8 ft walls, while 10-yard containers are shorter and lower.
