B = bit ÷ 8

Take the value in bits.
Divide it by 8 (the number of bits in one byte).

Example: 8 bit ÷ 8 = 1 B.

Reverse formula (bytes to bits): bit = B × 8. Example: 16 B × 8 = 128 bit.

Bits (bit). The bit is the smallest unit of digital information: a single 0 or 1.

Bytes (B). A byte is 8 bits, enough to store one basic text character.

One bit equals 0.125 bytes. Looking at it the other way, one byte is 8 bits.

Why does my computer show a smaller size?

Storage makers use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) but Windows uses binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) while still writing GB. So a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB.

Why are internet speeds in bits?

Network speeds are measured in bits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are in bytes. Divide Mbps by 8 to get megabytes per second: 100 Mbps ≈ 12.5 MB/s.
