How to use the Keyboard Cleaner

  1. Close or save your work in other windows, just in case.
  2. Choose Auto-unlock if you want the lock to end by itself.
  3. Press Lock keyboard. The page goes full screen and shows Keyboard locked.
  4. Wipe the keyboard with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Keys light up on the map as you press them, so you can see any you missed.
  5. Hold Esc for 2 seconds, or press and hold the Unlock button, to unlock.

How to clean a keyboard step by step

  1. Shake out loose crumbs. Tip the keyboard upside down over a bin and tap it gently, or use short bursts of compressed air at an angle between the keys.
  2. Lock the keyboard with this page so wiping does not type anything.
  3. Wipe the key tops with a lint-free or microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Wring it out well: it should be damp, not wet.
  4. Clean between the keys with a cotton swab dampened the same way.
  5. Check the key map. Grey keys have not been pressed yet; give them a wipe too.
  6. Dry and unlock. Wipe with a dry cloth, wait a minute for any alcohol to evaporate, then hold Esc to unlock.

Things to avoid

  • Spraying cleaner directly onto the keyboard, or using bleach, acetone or abrasive powders, which can remove key legends and coatings.
  • Soaking a laptop keyboard: liquid can reach the motherboard underneath.
  • Pulling keycaps off laptop keyboards; their small clips break easily. On mechanical keyboards, use a keycap puller.
  • After cleaning, check that every key still registers with the keyboard tester, and use the keyboard chatter test if a key types twice.

Frequently asked questions

How does the keyboard lock work?

While locked, the page catches every keydown, keyup and keypress event before anything else can use it and cancels it, so nothing is typed or triggered. In Chrome and Edge on a computer, it also enters full screen and calls the Keyboard Lock API (navigator.keyboard.lock), which lets the page capture system shortcuts such as Alt+Tab, the Windows key and Esc.

Can it block Ctrl+Alt+Delete or the power button?

No. Ctrl+Alt+Delete on Windows, the power button and some hardware keys such as brightness or volume on laptops are handled by the operating system or firmware, and no web page can block them. Avoid pressing them hard while cleaning.

Does it work in Safari and Firefox?

Partly. Normal keys are blocked in every browser, but Safari and Firefox do not support the Keyboard Lock API, so system shortcuts such as ⌘+Tab or Alt+Tab and the Esc key leaving full screen still work. The lock stays on inside the page; hold the Unlock button to finish.

How do I unlock if my mouse is not working?

Hold the Esc key for two seconds. The ring next to Esc fills up and the keyboard unlocks. You can also set Auto-unlock before locking so the lock ends on its own.

Is it safe to clean my keyboard while the computer is on?

Yes, as long as the cloth is only slightly damp and no liquid drips between the keys. Use a lint-free cloth with water or 70% isopropyl alcohol, never spray directly onto the keyboard, and let it dry before typing. For a deep clean, turn the computer off or unplug the keyboard.

Can I lock a phone or tablet keyboard with it?

On-screen keyboards only appear when you tap a text field, so there is nothing to lock. The tool is meant for physical keyboards on computers and laptops, including Bluetooth keyboards connected to tablets.
