Words Per Minute Calculator
Turn a word or character count and a time into words per minute. For typing you get gross WPM, net WPM after errors, CPM and accuracy using the standard 5-characters-per-word rule. Switch modes to measure your reading speed or speaking rate and see how long any text will take you.

Include spaces and punctuation (most counters call this 'characters with spaces')
Mistakes left in the final text (wrong characters, or wrong words in word mode)
Optional: a speech, chapter or article length
How to use the Words Per Minute Calculator
- Choose a mode: typing speed, reading speed or speaking rate.
- Enter the count: characters typed (with spaces) or words, and for typing the number of uncorrected errors.
- Enter the time in minutes and seconds.
- Press Calculate WPM to see the main result, the formula with your numbers and the comparison table.
- Copy the results or download the table as CSV.
WPM formulas explained
Typing speed uses a standard word of 5 characters, counting letters, spaces and punctuation. That keeps scores fair whether the text is full of short words or long ones.
- Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. If you only have a word count: words ÷ minutes.
- Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). Each mistake left in the text costs one word per minute of the test.
- Accuracy = (characters − errors) ÷ characters × 100.
- CPM (characters per minute) = characters ÷ minutes = WPM × 5.
- Reading or speaking WPM = words ÷ minutes, and time needed = words ÷ WPM.
Example: you type 1,500 characters in 5 minutes and leave 6 errors. Gross = (1,500 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = 60 WPM. Net = 60 − 6 ÷ 5 = 58.8 WPM. Accuracy = 1,494 ÷ 1,500 = 99.6%, and CPM = 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300.
Errors cost more on short tests: 3 errors in a 1-minute test remove 3 WPM, while the same 3 errors in a 5-minute test remove only 0.6 WPM.
WPM and CPM quick reference
The speed labels below are rough guides used in this calculator, not official grades. Employers that ask for a minimum speed usually state their own number and often test net WPM.
| Net WPM | CPM | Words in 10 minutes | Rough level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 100 | 200 | Beginner (hunt and peck) |
| 30 | 150 | 300 | Below average |
| 40 | 200 | 400 | Average |
| 50 | 250 | 500 | Average to good |
| 60 | 300 | 600 | Above average |
| 75 | 375 | 750 | Fast |
| 90 | 450 | 900 | Very fast |
| 120 | 600 | 1,200 | Exceptional |
Tips for accurate measurements
- Count characters with spaces. A character counter gives this number directly; word counts are less precise because word length varies.
- Only count uncorrected errors for net WPM. Mistakes you fixed with Backspace already slowed your gross speed.
- Time at least 1 minute, ideally 3 to 5. Very short tests swing a lot from a single hesitation.
- Reading speed: read normally for comprehension, not as fast as possible, and time a passage of at least 500 words.
- Speaking rate: record a full run-through of your talk, count the words in your script and enter the recorded time.
Frequently asked questions
How is words per minute calculated for typing?
Typing tests count a standard word as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. For example 1,500 characters in 5 minutes is 300 words ÷ 5 = 60 gross WPM.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM is raw speed before mistakes are counted. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute: net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes). With 60 gross WPM and 6 errors in 5 minutes, net WPM is 60 − 1.2 = 58.8.
Why count 5 characters as a word?
Real words vary in length, so a fixed 5-character word (about the average English word plus a space) makes results comparable between texts. Typing a passage of long technical words therefore does not unfairly lower your score.
How do I convert CPM to WPM?
Divide characters per minute by 5. For example 300 CPM ÷ 5 = 60 WPM, and 60 WPM × 5 = 300 CPM.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy = (characters typed − errors) ÷ characters typed × 100. 1,500 characters with 6 errors gives 1,494 ÷ 1,500 = 99.6%. In word mode the same formula uses words and wrong words.
What is a typical reading speed?
A large 2019 review of reading studies (Brysbaert) put average silent reading for adults in English at about 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction. Speeds well above 450 WPM usually involve skimming.
How many words per minute do people speak?
Presentations and conversation usually fall around 130 to 160 words per minute; below about 110 sounds slow and above about 180 sounds rushed. Use the speaking mode to find your own pace from a timed rehearsal.
