How to use the Typing Test with Certificate
- Enter your name as you want it to appear on the certificate, and choose a test length.
- Click the typing box and start typing the text shown. The timer starts with your first keystroke.
- Fix mistakes with Backspace if you want; only errors left in the text lower your net WPM.
- Keep typing until time runs out. Your net WPM, accuracy and gross WPM appear, and the certificate fills in.
- Download the PDF or PNG, or press Print certificate and choose a printer or Save as PDF.
How the score on your certificate is calculated
Typing tests count speed in "words" of 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation, so long and short words are treated fairly. This test uses the standard gross and net WPM formulas:
- Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes.
- Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). This is the main figure on the certificate.
- Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100.
Example: in a 3 minute test you type 960 characters and leave 12 errors. Gross WPM = 960 ÷ 5 ÷ 3 = 64. Net WPM = 64 − 12 ÷ 3 = 60. Accuracy = 948 ÷ 960 = 98.8%.
Skill levels shown on the certificate
The level printed under your score is a simple label based on net WPM. It is meant as a friendly guide, not an official grading scale.
| Net WPM | Level on certificate | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 | Developing | Learn touch typing on the home row and practise accuracy daily |
| 30 – 44 | Intermediate | Stop looking at the keys; aim for 97% accuracy or better |
| 45 – 59 | Proficient | Comfortable for most office work; practise punctuation and capitals |
| 60 – 79 | Advanced | Fast enough for many transcription and data-heavy roles |
| 80 and above | Expert | Keep accuracy high as you push past 90 WPM |
Tips for a better certificate
- Pick the length the employer asks for. Many job tests last 1, 3 or 5 minutes. Longer tests are harder to keep fast, so a 5 minute certificate carries more weight than a 1 minute one.
- Accuracy beats bursts of speed. Every error left in the text is subtracted per minute from your WPM, so a few careful seconds fixing a word are often worth it.
- Read a word or two ahead while your fingers finish the current word.
- Warm up first. Take one practice run, then the test you want to keep.
- Print on good paper. For a crisp result, choose "Fit to page" and the highest print quality, or save the PDF and print it later.
Frequently asked questions
Is this typing certificate free?
Yes. The test, the certificate and the PDF and PNG downloads are completely free, with no sign-up and no watermark on a completed certificate. Everything is generated in your browser, so your name and results are never uploaded.
How is net WPM calculated?
Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes, because a standard word is 5 characters including spaces. Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). For example, 1,250 characters in 5 minutes is 50 gross WPM; with 10 errors left in the text, net WPM is 50 − 2 = 48.
How is accuracy measured?
Accuracy is the percentage of the characters in your final text that match the passage. Mistakes you fix with Backspace before the time runs out do not reduce accuracy, but they do cost time, so they still lower your WPM indirectly.
Will employers accept this certificate?
It depends on the employer. This is a self-administered online test, and the certificate says so; it is great for practice, a portfolio or a personal record. Some employers and agencies ask you to take their own proctored or online typing test, so check what they require.
Why didn't I get a certificate?
A certificate is only issued when you complete the full timed test you selected. If you press Stop test early, you still see your score, but the certificate stays as a sample. Start a new test and keep typing until the timer reaches zero.
What size is the certificate?
The PDF is A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm) and the PNG is 2000 × 1414 pixels, the same proportions, so it prints cleanly on A4 or US Letter paper. When printing on Letter paper, choose Fit to page in the print dialog.
What is a good typing speed for a certificate?
Many office and administrative jobs ask for roughly 40 to 50 WPM, while transcription and data-heavy roles may expect 60 WPM or more, usually with high accuracy. Requirements vary, so look at the job listing. Take the test more than once and keep your best certificate.
