How to use the Spacebar Counter

  1. Pick a mode: 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, or Endless to just count.
  2. Press the space bar to start. The timer begins on your first press. On a phone, tap the big key instead.
  3. Keep pressing as fast as you can. Holding the key down does not count, only separate presses.
  4. See your result: total presses, presses per second, your rank and a per-second chart.
  5. Press Enter or Esc (or the Restart button) to try again and beat your best score.

How presses per second is calculated

The score is simply presses ÷ seconds. If you press the space bar 68 times in a 10 second test, your speed is 68 ÷ 10 = 6.8 presses per second. In a 60 second test, 330 presses gives 330 ÷ 60 = 5.5 per second. In endless mode the time is measured from your first press until you stop.

Each press is counted on the moment the key goes down. When you hold a key, the operating system starts repeating it after about half a second, roughly 30 times per second. Those repeats are marked as auto-repeat and are ignored here, so you cannot cheat by holding the key, and your score reflects real taps.

Which mode should you pick?

  • 5 seconds measures your burst speed. Scores are highest here.
  • 10 seconds is the standard spacebar clicker test and the best for comparing with friends.
  • 30 and 60 seconds test stamina. Most people slow down by 15 to 25 percent after the first 10 seconds, which you can see in the per-second chart.
  • Endless is a plain spacebar counter: it just counts presses until you stop or reset it, handy for counting things or testing a key.

Tip: a mechanical keyboard with a light switch, or a laptop keyboard with short travel, usually gives higher scores than a heavy, deep key. If a press is sometimes not counted, the key may be worn; try the Keyboard Tester to check it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a spacebar counter?

A spacebar counter counts how many times you press the space bar. In a timed test it also works out your presses per second, so you can measure how fast you can tap the key.

What is a good spacebar CPS score?

Most people press the space bar about 5 to 7 times per second in a 10 second test. 8 to 10 presses per second is fast, and more than 10 usually needs a special technique such as using two fingers or tapping with the side of the thumb.

Does holding the space bar count?

No. When you hold a key down, your computer sends repeated key events. This counter ignores those auto-repeat events, so only real, separate presses are counted.

How can I press the space bar faster?

Keep your hand relaxed, rest your wrist and tap with your thumb or alternate two fingers. Short, light taps are faster than full presses. Warm up first and take breaks to avoid strain.

Why does the page not scroll when I press space?

Normally the space bar scrolls the page down. The counter blocks that while you use it so the page stays still and every press is counted.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the big on-screen space key. Each tap counts as one press, and the timer starts on your first tap.

Are my scores saved?

Your best score for each mode and your last attempts are saved only in your browser on this device. Clearing your browsing data resets them.
