How to use the Typing Test for Kids
- Choose a level: Letters for beginners, Short words, Sight words, or Sentences.
- Pick your age group and test length. One minute is a good first test.
- Click Start typing (or the typing box) and type the big word you see. The timer starts with your first key.
- Look at the keyboard helper if you get stuck: the next key glows and its colour shows which finger to use.
- See your stars, words per minute, accuracy and the keys to practise, then try to beat your score.
Levels and star goals
Each level adds a new skill. Children who are just starting should spend time on Letters until they can find the home-row keys without looking, then move on. Every word or sentence ends with a press of the space bar, just like real typing.
| Level | What you type | Example | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letters | 3-letter groups from the home row (A S D F J K L) | fjd | First steps, finding home keys |
| Short words | Simple 3-letter words | cat, sun, bus | Early readers |
| Sight words | Common words children learn to read on sight | said, where, could | Growing readers |
| Sentences | Short everyday sentences | The kite flies up high. | Confident readers, ages 9+ |
| Age group | 4-star goal | 3 stars | 2 stars | 5 stars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6–7 years | 8 WPM | 6 WPM | 4 WPM | 10.4 WPM |
| 8–9 years | 15 WPM | 11.25 WPM | 7.5 WPM | 19.5 WPM |
| 10–12 years | 22 WPM | 16.5 WPM | 11 WPM | 28.6 WPM |
These goals are friendly targets for this game, not official standards. Speed is WPM = (correct keys ÷ 5) ÷ minutes, and accuracy is correct keys ÷ all keys pressed × 100%. Accuracy under 90% removes one star and under 75% removes two, because careful typing matters more than fast typing.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Start on the home row. Left fingers rest on A S D F and right fingers on J K L ;. The small bumps on F and J help fingers find home without looking.
- Use the colours. The keyboard helper colours each key by the finger that should press it, so children learn the right finger from the start.
- Short and often. A few one-minute tests a day work better than one long session. Stop while it is still fun.
- Celebrate accuracy. Praise few mistakes as much as high speed. Speed grows naturally once the fingers know where to go.
- Sit well. Feet flat, wrists relaxed and the screen at eye level make typing more comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated for kids?
WPM means words per minute. Like most typing tests, this one counts every 5 correctly typed characters (including spaces between words) as one word, then divides by the minutes you typed. For example, 75 correct characters in 1 minute is 75 ÷ 5 = 15 WPM. Mistakes do not add to the speed.
How do the stars work?
Stars compare your speed with a goal for your age group: 8 WPM for ages 6–7, 15 WPM for ages 8–9 and 22 WPM for ages 10–12. Reaching a quarter of the goal earns 1 star, half 2 stars, three quarters 3 stars, the goal 4 stars and 30% above the goal 5 stars. Accuracy below 90% takes away one star and below 75% takes away two, but everyone who types gets at least 1 star.
What is a good typing speed for a child?
It varies a lot with age, practice and whether a child has learned touch typing. The star goals in this test are friendly targets chosen for this game, not official standards. The best measure is progress: try the same level and length each week and watch the WPM and accuracy go up.
What happens when my child presses the wrong key?
The letter stays in place and flashes red, and the mistake is counted. Your child simply presses the right key to carry on. This teaches accuracy first, which is the best habit for beginners.
Which level should we start with?
Ages 6–7 or children new to keyboards should start with Letters, which uses the home-row keys (A S D F J K L). Short words and Sight words come next. Sentences with capitals and punctuation suit confident readers aged about 9 and up.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no chat and nothing to download. Everything runs in the browser and scores are kept only on this device. All words and sentences are simple, everyday and family-friendly.
Does it work on a tablet or phone?
It works with any keyboard, including tablet keyboards and Bluetooth keyboards. On a phone the screen keyboard appears when you tap the typing box, but a real keyboard is much better for learning to type.
