How to use the Typing Practice Lessons

  1. Place your fingers on the home row: left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;, thumbs over Space. Feel for the bumps on F and J.
  2. Pick a lesson from the list (it opens at the first lesson you have not passed) and click the text box.
  3. Type the highlighted character. The keyboard shows the key and its finger color; a wrong key turns red and must be fixed before you continue.
  4. Finish the text to see your WPM, accuracy and stars. 90% accuracy passes the lesson; 98% earns 3 stars.
  5. Move to the next lesson, or press New practice text to repeat the same keys with different words.

Finger chart: which finger types which key

Touch typing works because every key belongs to one finger. Each finger starts on its home key and moves straight up or down the keyboard's slanted columns. The colors in the lessons follow this chart.

FingerHome keyLettersNumbers & symbols
Left littleAQ, A, Z`, 1, Tab, Caps Lock, left Shift
Left ringSW, S, X2
Left middleDE, D, C3
Left indexFR, F, V, T, G, B4, 5

Right indexJY, H, N, U, J, M6, 7
Right middleKI, K8, comma
Right ringLO, L9, period
Right little;P0, - =, [ ] \, ; ', /, Enter, Backspace, right Shift

Shift rule: press Shift with the little finger of the opposite hand to the letter. For a capital A (left hand) use the right Shift; for a capital J (right hand) use the left Shift.

How the lessons are ordered

The course follows the classic touch-typing order: start with the eight home keys, add the inner index keys G and H, then learn the top row, the bottom row, capital letters, the number row and punctuation, one pair of keys at a time. Every lesson mixes the two new keys with keys you already know, so earlier keys keep getting practice. Lessons 1 to 15 use only lower-case letters and the keys taught so far; the final lesson uses full sentences with every letter of the alphabet.

Practice tips

  • Don't look down. Use the on-screen keyboard instead of your hands. Looking down is the habit touch typing replaces.
  • Return home. After each key, let the finger drop back to its home key. The bumps on F and J tell you when you are in place.
  • Posture. Sit upright, feet flat, elbows at about 90 degrees, wrists straight and floating just above the keyboard.
  • Rhythm over bursts. An even beat (like a metronome) is faster in the end than fast bursts followed by pauses to fix errors.
  • Little and often. Repeat a lesson until you get 2 or 3 stars, then move on. Come back to earlier lessons if a key feels shaky.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

Most people learn the key positions in a few hours of lessons spread over one to two weeks, and reach their previous hunt-and-peck speed within a few weeks of daily practice. Short sessions of 15 to 20 minutes a day work better than one long session, because the movements need repetition and rest to stick.

What are the home row keys?

On a QWERTY keyboard the home row keys are A, S, D and F for the left hand and J, K, L and ; for the right hand. The F and J keys have small raised bumps so you can find them without looking. Every other key is reached from these positions and the fingers return home after each press.

Which finger presses which key?

Each finger covers a diagonal column: little fingers take Q A Z and P ; / plus Shift, Enter and the outer keys, ring fingers W S X and O L ., middle fingers E D C and I K ,, and index fingers cover two columns each, R F V T G B and Y H N U J M. The on-screen keyboard uses one color per finger so you can see these zones.

How is WPM calculated?

Words per minute uses the standard definition of a word as 5 characters, including spaces: WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. For example, 250 characters in 60 seconds is 50 WPM. Because this trainer makes you correct errors before moving on, mistakes lower your WPM automatically.

How is accuracy calculated in the lessons?

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100. Every wrong key counts once, even if you fix it afterwards. Reaching 90% passes a lesson, 95% earns 2 stars and 98% earns 3 stars.

Should I focus on speed or accuracy?

Accuracy. Speed comes from smooth, correct movements repeated many times; rushing builds wrong habits that are hard to unlearn. Type at a pace where you rarely make mistakes, and your speed will increase on its own. When accuracy stays above 97%, try pushing a little faster.

Where is my progress saved?

Your best WPM, accuracy and stars for each lesson are saved in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and clearing your browser data (or pressing Reset all progress) deletes it.
