KG to Newtons Converter
Enter a mass in kilograms to get its weight force in newtons, or type in the newtons box to go back. Standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²) is used by default; you can switch to Earth's equator, the poles, the Moon, Mars or a custom g.

How to use the KG to Newtons Converter
- Type the mass in the Kilograms box. The force in newtons appears instantly.
- Need newtons to kg? Type in the Newtons box or press the ⇄ swap button.
- Pick the gravity: keep standard gravity or choose a location or custom g.
- Set the decimal places and read the worked formula below the result.
- Copy or print: press Copy result, or Print table to print the reference tables.
KG to newtons formula
- Take the mass in kilograms.
- Multiply it by the gravitational acceleration
g. Standard gravity is9.80665 m/s². - The answer is the weight force in newtons (1 N = 1 kg·m/s²).
Example: a 5 kg bag of flour weighs 5 × 9.80665 = 49.03 N. A 70 kg person weighs 70 × 9.80665 = 686.47 N.
Reverse formula (newtons to kg): kg = N ÷ 9.80665. Example: 100 N ÷ 9.80665 = 10.197 kg.
Mental shortcut: multiply by 10. It is only about 2% high (10 kg ≈ 100 N, exact 98.07 N), which is fine for a rough estimate but not for engineering work.

Mass vs weight: what "kg to newtons" really means
A kilogram is a unit of mass (how much matter something has), while a newton is a unit of force. They are not the same quantity, so the conversion needs a gravity value: the weight of a mass is F = m × g. When people say "1 kg = 9.81 N" they mean the force that 1 kg presses down with on Earth.
That force has its own old unit, the kilogram-force (kgf), also written kilopond (kp). It is defined with standard gravity, gn = 9.80665 m/s², which was fixed by the 3rd General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1901. So 1 kgf = 9.80665 N exactly, and that is the factor this converter uses by default. Bathroom scales, luggage scales and many spec sheets show "kg" but actually measure a force and assume standard gravity.
Real gravity on Earth varies by about 0.5% with latitude and altitude, from roughly 9.780 m/s² at the equator to 9.832 m/s² at the poles. Choose a preset or type a custom g above if you need the true weight force at a particular place, or on another world.
Weight of 1 kg on Earth, the Moon and the planets
The mass stays the same everywhere; only the force (in newtons) changes with the local surface gravity. Values are rounded surface gravities.
| Place | g (m/s²) | Weight of 1 kg | Weight of 70 kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard gravity (definition) | 9.80665 | 9.807 N | 686.5 N |
| Earth, equator (sea level) | 9.7803 | 9.78 N | 684.6 N |
| Earth, poles (sea level) | 9.8322 | 9.832 N | 688.3 N |
| Moon | 1.62 | 1.62 N | 113.4 N |
| Mercury | 3.7 | 3.7 N | 259.0 N |
| Mars | 3.72 | 3.72 N | 260.4 N |
| Venus | 8.87 | 8.87 N | 620.9 N |
| Jupiter | 24.79 | 24.79 N | 1,735.3 N |
Tips
- For forces in pounds, 1 N = 0.2248 lbf and 1 kgf = 2.2046 lbf.
- Large loads are usually quoted in kilonewtons: 1 kN ≈ 102 kgf, so a 1,000 kg (1 tonne) load weighs about 9.81 kN.
- Torque is a different quantity (force × distance). For kgf·m or N·m, use a torque converter.
Frequently asked questions
How many newtons are in 1 kg?
On Earth, a 1 kg mass weighs 9.80665 N using standard gravity, often rounded to 9.81 N or roughly 10 N. Strictly, 1 kilogram-force (kgf) equals exactly 9.80665 newtons.
What is the formula to convert kg to newtons?
Multiply the mass in kilograms by the acceleration due to gravity: F (N) = m (kg) × g. With standard gravity, N = kg × 9.80665. For example, 20 kg × 9.80665 = 196.13 N.
Can you really convert kilograms to newtons?
Only with a gravity value. Kilograms measure mass and newtons measure force, so the result is the weight force of that mass under a given gravity. On the Moon (g ≈ 1.62 m/s²) the same 1 kg weighs only about 1.62 N.
Is 1 kg equal to 10 newtons?
Approximately. Using g = 10 m/s² is a common classroom shortcut, but it overstates the force by about 2%. The accurate value with standard gravity is 9.80665 N.
What is a kilogram-force (kgf)?
The kilogram-force, also called the kilopond, is the force exerted by a 1 kg mass under standard gravity of 9.80665 m/s². It is not an SI unit, but it still appears on scales, springs, load ratings and older engineering documents.
How many kg is 1 kilonewton?
1 kN is about 101.97 kg-force at standard gravity (1,000 ÷ 9.80665). So a 1 tonne mass weighs about 9.81 kN.
