How to use the Newtons to KG Converter

    1. Type the force in the Newtons box. The mass in kilograms appears instantly.
    2. Going the other way? Type in the Kilograms box or press the ⇄ swap button.
    3. Choose the gravity: standard gravity, a preset, or your own value in m/s².
    4. Pick the decimal places and check the step-by-step working.
    5. Copy or print the result, or click any table row to load it.

    Newtons to KG formula

    kg = N ÷ 9.80665
    1. Take the force in newtons.
    2. Divide it by the gravitational acceleration g (standard gravity is 9.80665 m/s²), or multiply by 0.101972.
    3. The answer is the mass in kilograms that would produce that weight, also called kilograms-force (kgf).

    Example: a luggage scale reads 200 N, so the bag is 200 ÷ 9.80665 = 20.39 kg. A force of 1 kN corresponds to 1,000 ÷ 9.80665 = 101.97 kg.

    Reverse formula (kg to newtons): N = kg × 9.80665. Example: 15 kg × 9.80665 = 147.1 N.

    Mental shortcut: divide by 10, then add 2%. 300 N → 30 → about 30.6 kg (exact 30.59 kg).

Reading kN and N ratings in kilograms

Strength ratings for ropes, slings, anchors, carabiners, straps and load cells are usually printed in newtons or kilonewtons. Converting to kilograms-force gives an intuitive feel: it is the mass that would hang from the item under normal Earth gravity. Remember that these are often breaking strengths measured in a lab, not safe working loads; always follow the manufacturer's working-load limit.

Why newtons to kg depends on gravity

The newton is the SI unit of force: 1 N is the force that accelerates 1 kg by 1 m/s². A kilogram measures mass. To turn a force into a mass you divide by the acceleration that produced it, so m = F ÷ g. With standard gravity (9.80665 m/s², the value that defines the kilogram-force) 1 N = 0.101972 kg, about 102 grams, roughly the weight of a small apple.

The same force means a different mass elsewhere. A 100 N reading corresponds to 10.2 kg on Earth but 61.7 kg on the Moon (g ≈ 1.62 m/s²) and 26.9 kg on Mars (g ≈ 3.72 m/s²). Use the gravity menu above to apply these, or type your own g, for example a lab value measured with a pendulum.

    Tips

    • A digital force gauge set to N reads about 9.8 times the number shown in kgf mode.
    • To get pounds instead, 1 N = 0.2248 lbf, and 1 kg = 2.2046 lb.
    • For torque values (N·m), use a torque converter: torque is force times distance, not a weight.

    Frequently asked questions

How many kg is 1 newton?

Using standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²), 1 N corresponds to 0.101972 kg, about 102 grams. That is the mass that weighs one newton on Earth.

How do I convert newtons to kilograms?

    Divide the force by the acceleration due to gravity: m (kg) = F (N) ÷ g. On Earth, kg = N ÷ 9.80665. For example, 500 N ÷ 9.80665 = 50.99 kg.

How many kg is 1 kN?

1 kilonewton equals 1,000 N, which corresponds to about 101.97 kg-force under standard gravity. A quick estimate is 1 kN ≈ 100 kg.

Why does the answer change with gravity?

Newtons measure force and kilograms measure mass. The mass that produces a given force depends on the gravitational acceleration, so 100 N is about 10.2 kg on Earth but about 61.7 kg on the Moon.

What is the difference between kg and kgf?

A kilogram (kg) is a mass. A kilogram-force (kgf) is the weight of 1 kg under standard gravity, exactly 9.80665 N. When a force in newtons is "converted to kg", the result is really in kgf.

Is it accurate to divide newtons by 10 to get kg?

It is a handy estimate but about 2% low. Dividing by 9.80665 gives the exact kilogram-force value; for example 1,000 N is 101.97 kg, not 100 kg.
