How to use the Weight Converter
- Type a weight into any unit, for example 70 in Kilograms or 12 in Ounces.
- Use the combined rows for stone + pounds (body weight) or pounds + ounces (newborns, parcels).
- Read the headline: it pairs your unit with its most common counterpart (kg ⇄ lb, g ⇄ oz).
- Check the formula panel for the exact factor used, then copy a single value or all results.
- Make a chart with the conversion table and download it as CSV.
How the weight conversions are calculated
Every unit is defined from the kilogram. The converter multiplies your value by the unit’s kilogram factor and divides by the target factor: result = value × kg per source unit ÷ kg per target unit. Example: 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.0389 kg, and 68.0389 kg ÷ 6.35029318 = 10.714 st (10 st 10 lb).
Three separate families of “ounce” and “pound” exist. Everyday goods use avoirdupois (16 oz per lb). Precious metals use troy (12 oz t per troy pound, 20 pennyweights per ounce). Both share the 64.79891 mg grain, which is why grains bridge the two systems.

| 1 grain | 1/7,000 lb | 64.79891 mg (exact) |
| 1 carat | 3.08647 grains | 200 mg (exact) |
| 1 kilogram | 2.20462 lb ≈ 35.274 oz | 1,000 g |
Practical tips
- Kitchen scales: 1 oz ≈ 28 g is close enough for cooking; baking by grams is more reliable than by cups.
- Body weight: the UK and Ireland often quote stone and pounds, the US uses pounds and most other countries use kilograms.
- Shipping: carriers round up to the next whole pound or half kilogram, so check the exact value before you print a label.
- Bullion: a “1 oz” gold coin always means 1 troy ounce (31.1 g), not 28.35 g.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds. The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so kg × 2.20462262 = lb and lb × 0.45359237 = kg.
How do I convert stone to kilograms?
One stone is 14 pounds, which is exactly 6.35029318 kg. For example, 11 st 4 lb = 158 lb = 71.67 kg. Use the Stone + pounds row to enter both parts.
What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?
A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g and is used for gold, silver and platinum. A regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.349523125 g. A troy pound has 12 troy ounces, not 16.
What is the difference between a ton, a long ton and a tonne?
A US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg), a UK long ton is 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg) and a metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,204.62 lb).
How much does a carat weigh?
A metric carat is exactly 200 mg (0.2 g), so a 1.5 ct gemstone weighs 0.3 g. Do not confuse it with karat, which measures gold purity.
What is a grain used for?
The grain (64.79891 mg) is the base of the avoirdupois and troy systems: 7,000 grains make a pound. It is still used for bullets, arrows and some older pharmaceutical labels.
Is weight the same as mass?
Strictly, kilograms and pounds measure mass, while weight is a force. On Earth they match closely, so everyday “weight” conversions use mass units. The converter also shows the force at standard gravity in newtons.
