Character limits and “see more” cut-offs

Platform stylePost limitShown before “more”Notes
X / Twitter280 (weighted)Whole postLinks count as 23; emoji and CJK characters count as 2
Facebook63,206About 480 charactersShort text-only posts are shown in a larger font
Instagram2,200About 125 characters or 2 linesUp to 30 hashtags; an image or video is required
LinkedIn3,000About 210 characters or 3 linesStyled Unicode letters count as 2
Threads500Whole postLonger text needs a thread of several posts

Limits are for standard accounts and change from time to time. Treat them as a planning guide, not a guarantee.

Worked example: counting an X post

Take the post Launch day 🚀 https://example.com/blog/our-new-product-is-here. The words and spaces “Launch day ” are 11 characters, the rocket emoji counts as 2, the space before the link is 1 and the link counts as 23 even though it is 48 characters long. The X-style total is 11 + 2 + 1 + 23 = 37 of 280. On Threads, which counts every visible character, the same text is 61 characters.

Image sizes that crop well

Platform styleGood upload sizeAspect ratio
X / Twitter1600 × 90016:9
Facebook1200 × 630 or 1080 × 13501.91:1 or 4:5
Instagram1080 × 13504:5 (portrait) or 1:1
LinkedIn1200 × 627 or 1080 × 10801.91:1 or 1:1
Threads1080 × 13504:5

The preview crops very tall or very wide images the same way most feeds do, so you can see whether faces or text near the edges get cut off.

Tips for mock-ups

  • Client approval: send the PNG with the copy so everyone signs off on the exact wording and image crop.
  • Front-load the message: on Instagram and LinkedIn only the first line or two are visible, so lead with the hook.
  • One post, many platforms: the Fits on every platform table shows at a glance where the text needs trimming.
  • Be honest: mock-ups are for planning. Don't present them as real posts or use someone else's name and photo.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real screenshots of X, Facebook or Instagram?

No. They are original drawings that follow the general layout of each feed so you can judge length, line breaks and image crops. They use no real logos, are labeled as preview mock-ups and are not affiliated with any platform. Please don't use them to impersonate anyone or to fake real posts.

How are X/Twitter characters counted?

X counts a link as 23 characters whatever its length, most emoji as 2, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2 each, against a limit of 280 for standard accounts. The counter follows those rules, so the number can differ from a plain character count.

What are the character limits?

Common limits are 280 for X (standard accounts), 63,206 for Facebook posts, 2,200 for Instagram captions with at most 30 hashtags, 3,000 for LinkedIn posts and 500 for Threads posts. Platforms change these from time to time, so check before relying on an exact number.

Why is my text cut off with “see more”?

Feeds hide long text behind a link: roughly 125 characters on Instagram, about 210 characters or 3 lines on LinkedIn and around 480 characters on Facebook. Tick Expand “see more” text to preview the full post.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your avatar and image are opened directly in your browser and drawn on a canvas. Nothing is sent to a server, and the images are forgotten when you close the page.

What size is the PNG?

The export is 1,120 pixels wide (twice the 560-pixel preview) and as tall as the post needs, so it stays sharp on slides and high-resolution screens.
