Border

% is measured on the photo's shorter side, so the frame looks the same at any resolution.

Rounded corners

% of the frame's shorter side (50% = fully round). Corners round the border and photo together; outside corners are transparent in PNG and WebP.

How to use the Image Border Adder

  1. Add a photo: drop it on the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or click Choose image.
  2. Pick a preset such as Thin white, Polaroid or Rounded card, or set the border yourself.
  3. Set the border: width (px or % of the shorter side) and color, or tick Gradient border for two colors.
  4. Round the corners with the radius, and add a matte, extra bottom space or a drop shadow if you like.
  5. Download as PNG or WebP to keep transparent corners and shadow, or JPG with a solid background color.

How the output size is calculated

The border is added around the photo, never on top of it, so the result is bigger than the original:

  • Width = photo width + 2 × (border + matte)
  • Height = photo height + 2 × (border + matte) + extra bottom
  • With a drop shadow, a transparent margin of (blur + offset + 2) px is added on every side so the shadow is not cut off.

Example: a 4000 × 3000 px photo with a 3% border. The shorter side is 3000 px, so the border is 90 px and the output is 4000 + 180 = 4180 × 3180 px. Adding a 5% matte (150 px) gives 4000 + 2 × 240 = 4480 × 3480 px.

For rounded corners, the radius applies to the outside of the frame. The photo inside gets a radius reduced by the border and matte width, so both curves stay parallel, the same way a physical rounded frame looks.

PNG, JPG or WebP?

PNG keeps transparent rounded corners and shadows and is lossless, but photos get large. WebP also keeps transparency and is usually much smaller than PNG, and all modern browsers display it. JPG has no transparency, so choose an outside color that matches where the image will be shown (for example white for a white web page).

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a border to a photo?

Open the photo in this tool, enter a border width, choose a color and press Download framed image. The border is added around the outside, so none of your photo is cropped and the output grows by twice the border width in each direction.

Should I use pixels or percent for the border width?

Percent keeps the frame looking the same on any image size: 5% of the shorter side is a medium border on both a 1000 px and a 4000 px photo. Use pixels when you need an exact value, for example a 20 px white border for a print template.

How do I make the corners transparent?

Set a corner radius and download as PNG or WebP with Outside area set to Transparent. The area outside the rounded corners (and around the shadow) will be fully transparent. JPG cannot store transparency, so it uses the outside color instead.

What is a matte?

A matte (or passe-partout) is the inner band between the frame and the picture, often off-white, as in framed art prints. Set Matte width above 0 and pick its color; the outer border then acts as the frame.

How do I make a Polaroid-style frame?

Click the Polaroid preset, or use a white border of about 4% and set Extra bottom to about 14%. The extra space at the bottom is a nice spot for a handwritten-style caption.

Will the border reduce my photo's quality?

No. The photo is drawn at its original resolution inside the new, larger canvas. PNG export is lossless; JPG and WebP let you choose the quality.

Can I add a border to many images at once?

This tool frames one image at a time so you can fine-tune each one. Your settings stay in place while you open the next photo, so framing a series takes only a few clicks each.
