- Crop by dragging over the part you want and pressing Crop to selection.
- Annotate with the Pen, Highlight, Arrow, Box or Text tools, and use Blur to hide private information.
- Copy or download: Copy image puts a PNG on your clipboard; Download PNG or JPG saves the file.
Built-in screenshot shortcuts vs. this tool
Every operating system has its own screenshot keys. They are the fastest way to grab the screen; this tool adds a quick editor for cropping, annotating and blurring, and it works the same on every desktop browser. You can also take a shot with the keys below and paste it here with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac).
| System | Whole screen | Region or window | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 / 11 | Win+PrtScn | Win+Shift+S (Snipping Tool) | Pictures › Screenshots; Snipping Tool copies to the clipboard |
| macOS | ⌘+Shift+3 | ⌘+Shift+4 (Space for a window) | Desktop; add Ctrl to copy to the clipboard |
| ChromeOS | Ctrl+Show windows | Ctrl+Shift+Show windows | Downloads and clipboard |
| Linux (GNOME) | Shift+PrtScn | PrtScn opens the screenshot tool | Pictures › Screenshots and clipboard |
| This page | Capture → Entire screen | Capture → Window or Tab, then crop | Clipboard (Copy image) or PNG / JPG download |
Tips for clear, shareable screenshots
- Capture a tab for clean results. Sharing a single browser tab leaves out the address bar, bookmarks and other windows, so there is less to crop and less to hide.
- Crop tightly. A screenshot that shows only the relevant button or message is easier to understand than a full screen with a small arrow.
- One arrow, one point. Use a red arrow or box for the one thing you want people to notice, and short text labels for steps (1, 2, 3).
- Blur before you share. Email addresses, account numbers, access tokens and faces of other people are easy to forget in a corner of the screen.
- PNG for interfaces, JPG for photos. PNG keeps text sharp; a JPG of a full-screen interface can show smudgy edges around letters.
Frequently asked questions
How does an online screenshot tool capture my screen?
It uses the browser's built-in Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia), the same feature video-call sites use for screen sharing. Your browser asks which screen, window or tab to share, the tool copies a single frame into an image, and sharing stops straight away unless you choose to keep it on. The image never leaves your device.
Which browsers support it?
Screen capture works in current desktop versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. Most phone and tablet browsers do not allow web pages to capture the screen; there, take a screenshot with your device's buttons and paste or open it here to crop and annotate it.
Is it safe? Can the site see my screen?
The capture happens entirely inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, recorded or stored on a server, and the browser shows a clear sharing indicator while capture is active. Press Stop sharing, or your browser's own stop button, at any time.
Why is my screenshot black or missing a window?
Some protected content, such as streaming video players, is blocked from screen capture by the operating system. On macOS you may also need to allow your browser under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording, then restart the browser.
How do I take a screenshot of a menu or hover state?
Pick a 3, 5 or 10 second delay before pressing Capture screenshot. After you choose what to share, a countdown runs; use that time to switch to the other window and open the menu. The frame is grabbed when the countdown reaches zero.
What size and format are the screenshots?
Screenshots keep the full resolution the browser provides, usually your screen's real pixel size (for example 2880 × 1800 on a high-density laptop display). PNG is lossless and best for text and interfaces; JPG files are smaller and suit photos. Copy image always places a PNG on the clipboard.
How do I hide passwords or personal details?
Choose Blur and drag a box over the area. The region is pixelated in large blocks, which cannot be reversed in the saved image. Check the result before sharing, and crop away anything you do not need.
