Sitemap tags explained
| Tag | Required | Allowed values | Used by Google |
|---|---|---|---|
<loc> | Yes | Absolute URL starting with http or https, under 2,048 characters, XML-escaped | Yes |
<lastmod> | No | W3C date: 2026-10-19 or 2026-10-19T14:30:00+00:00 | Yes, if it is consistently accurate |
<changefreq> | No | always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, never | No (ignored) |
<priority> | No | 0.0 to 1.0, default 0.5, relative to your other pages | No (ignored) |
With Auto by URL depth, priority is 1.0 for the home page and drops by 0.2 for each folder level: /about/ gets 0.8, /blog/post/ gets 0.6, and anything deeper gets 0.4.
Characters that must be escaped
A sitemap must be UTF-8 and every URL must be escaped for XML. The generator does this for you:
| Character | Written as | Example |
|---|---|---|
| & (ampersand) | & | ?color=green&size=l |
| ' (apostrophe) | ' | /kid's-room/ |
| " (quote) | " | rare in URLs |
| < and > | < and > | rare in URLs |
| Spaces and non-ASCII letters | Percent-encoded | /café becomes /caf%C3%A9 |

- Regenerate the sitemap when you add or remove pages, and only change
lastmodwhen the page content actually changed.
Frequently asked questions
What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages of a website so search engines can discover them. It follows the sitemaps.org protocol, which is supported by Google, Bing, Yandex and others, and can include the date each page last changed.
Do priority and changefreq matter?
Google has said it ignores priority and changefreq. Bing and some other crawlers may still read them, so they are harmless to include. The lastmod date does matter to Google, but only if it is accurate, so set it to the date the page content really changed.
How many URLs can a sitemap have?
Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. For larger sites, split the URLs over several sitemap files and list them in a sitemap index file. This tool does the split automatically when you paste more than 50,000 URLs.
Where do I put the sitemap file?
Upload it to the root of your site, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml. A sitemap can only list URLs on the same host and in the same folder or below, so a sitemap in the root can cover the whole site.
How do I tell Google about my sitemap?
Submit the sitemap URL in Google Search Console under Sitemaps, and add a line such as Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml to your robots.txt file so all search engines can find it.
Which URLs should I include?
Only canonical, indexable pages that return status 200: no redirects, no pages blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex, and no duplicate versions with tracking parameters. Use one consistent form for every URL, such as https and with or without www.
