Questions and answers
Answers may use basic HTML that Google allows: <p>, <br>, <ul>, <ol>, <li>, <a>, <b>, <strong>, <i>, <em>, <h1>–<h6> and <div>.
Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health websites. The markup is still valid and can be read by other search engines and AI assistants.
How to use the FAQ Schema Generator
- Enter your questions and answers, or click Import from text to paste an existing FAQ.
- Fix any red errors: every question needs an answer, and empty pairs are left out.
- Choose the format: with the script tag for pasting into HTML, or raw JSON for a CMS field or tag manager.
- Copy the code and paste it into the <head> or <body> of the page that shows the same FAQ.
- Test it with Open Rich Results Test (the code is copied for you) and request indexing in Search Console.
Anatomy of FAQPage markup
Every FAQ schema block has the same three-level structure. The generator builds it for you, but it helps to know what each property means when you edit the code by hand.
| Property | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
@context | https://schema.org | The vocabulary used |
@type | FAQPage | The whole page is a list of frequently asked questions |
mainEntity | array of Question | One item per question, in the order shown on the page |
Question.name | text | The full question exactly as written on the page (required) |
acceptedAnswer | Answer | The single official answer (required) |
Answer.text | text or limited HTML | The full answer as shown on the page (required) |
FAQPage, QAPage or HowTo?
- FAQPage: you wrote the questions and the answers, and each question has one answer. Support pages, shipping and returns pages, product and service FAQs.
- QAPage: one question per page, asked by a user, with answers from the community that can be voted on. Forums and Q&A sites.
- HowTo: step-by-step instructions to complete a task. Use the Schema Markup Generator for HowTo, Product, Article, Organization and other types.
Tips for a good FAQ section
- Answer the real questions customers ask support, search for or type into your site search, not marketing slogans phrased as questions.
- Lead with the answer. Put the direct answer in the first sentence, then add details. Search engines and AI assistants often quote only the first part.
- Keep answers self-contained so each still makes sense when shown alone, without "as mentioned above".
- Update the markup with the page. When you edit an answer on the page, regenerate the JSON-LD so both match.
Frequently asked questions
What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is structured data using the schema.org FAQPage type. It describes the questions and answers on a page in a machine-readable format, usually JSON-LD, so search engines and AI assistants can understand that the page contains an FAQ and which answer belongs to which question.
Does Google still show FAQ rich results?
Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites; for other sites the markup is still valid but usually does not create the expandable FAQ in results. Other search engines such as Bing can still use it, and it helps machines understand your content.
Where do I put the FAQ JSON-LD code?
Paste the script tag anywhere in the HTML of the page, usually in the head or just before the closing body tag. In WordPress you can use a custom HTML block or a header-scripts plugin, and in Google Tag Manager a custom HTML tag also works, although Google recommends adding it to the page itself.
Do the questions have to appear on the page?
Yes. Google's guidelines require that all FAQ content in the markup is visible to users on the page, and the answers must be the same as on the page. Marking up content that users cannot see can lead to a manual action.
Can I use FAQ schema for user-submitted questions?
No. FAQPage is for pages where the site owner wrote both the questions and the single official answers. A page where users ask questions and others post answers, like a forum or product Q&A, should use the QAPage type instead.
Can answers contain links and formatting?
Yes. The answer text may include these HTML tags: h1 to h6, br, ol, ul, li, a, p, div, b, strong, i and em. Other tags are ignored by Google, and the tool warns you when it finds them.
Is one FAQPage per page allowed?
Use one FAQPage block per page that lists all its questions. If the same question appears on several pages of your site, mark it up on only one of them.
