PPC formulas
| Metric | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| CPC | spend ÷ clicks | $500 ÷ 400 = $1.25 |
| Ad spend | CPC × clicks | $1.25 × 400 = $500 |
| Clicks | budget ÷ CPC | $500 ÷ $1.25 = 400 |
| CTR | clicks ÷ impressions × 100 | 400 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2% |
| CPM | spend ÷ impressions × 1,000 | $500 ÷ 20,000 × 1,000 = $25 |
| Conversion rate | conversions ÷ clicks × 100 | 20 ÷ 400 × 100 = 5% |
| CPA | spend ÷ conversions | $500 ÷ 20 = $25 |
| ROAS | revenue ÷ spend | $2,000 ÷ $500 = 4× |
How the metrics connect
CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR%), so a higher click-through rate lowers your cost per click at the same CPM. Likewise CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate: a $1.25 CPC with a 5% conversion rate costs $25 per customer. The maximum CPC you can afford is roughly the value of a conversion × conversion rate, before other costs.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cost per click?
CPC = total ad spend ÷ number of clicks. If you spent $500 and got 400 clicks, your CPC is $500 ÷ 400 = $1.25.
What is the difference between CPC and CPM?
CPC is the cost of one click; CPM is the cost of 1,000 impressions (views of the ad). They are linked by CTR: CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 10) when CTR is in percent. $25 CPM at a 2% CTR equals a $1.25 CPC.
What is a good CPC?
It depends on the platform, country, industry and how valuable a customer is. Competitive fields such as legal, insurance and finance often cost several dollars per click or more, while entertainment or broad consumer topics can cost cents. A CPC is good if your cost per acquisition stays below what a customer is worth.
How many clicks will my budget buy?
Clicks = budget ÷ CPC. A $1,000 budget at $0.80 per click buys about 1,250 clicks. Use the Clicks mode and the scenario table to compare CPCs.
How is CTR calculated?
CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100. 400 clicks from 20,000 impressions is a 2% CTR.
What is the difference between CPC and CPA?
CPC is what you pay for each click; CPA is what you pay for each conversion (a sale, sign-up or lead). CPA = spend ÷ conversions, which is also CPC ÷ conversion rate.
