Counting tips
An at-bat is a plate appearance that does not end in a walk, hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly or catcher's interference.
Reaching base on an error or a fielder's choice counts as an at-bat without a hit.
Averages are rounded to three decimals and the leading zero is dropped: 0.2857 is written .286.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate batting average?
Batting average = hits ÷ at-bats. For example, 150 hits in 500 at-bats is 150 ÷ 500 = 0.300, written as .300 and said “three hundred”.
Do walks count as at-bats?
No. Walks, hit by pitches, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies and catcher's interference are plate appearances but not at-bats, so they do not change batting average. Walks and hit by pitches do count toward on-base percentage.
What is the OBP formula?
On-base percentage = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF). Sacrifice flies are in the denominator, while sacrifice bunts are left out entirely.
How is slugging percentage calculated?
Slugging percentage = total bases ÷ at-bats, where total bases = singles + 2 × doubles + 3 × triples + 4 × home runs. It measures power, so it can be higher than 1.000 in small samples.
What is a good batting average?
In modern Major League Baseball the league average is usually around .240 to .255, so .300 is considered excellent and .200 is weak. Averages in youth, high school and softball leagues are often higher.
What is OPS and what is a good OPS?
OPS is on-base percentage plus slugging percentage, a quick measure of overall hitting. In MLB, an OPS around .700 to .730 is roughly average, .800 is very good and .900 or more is star level.
What is BABIP?
Batting average on balls in play = (H − HR) ÷ (AB − K − HR + SF). It looks only at balls put into the field of play and is often used to judge whether a hot or cold streak involves luck.
